Sailing Movies

Post by jschrade »

I did a search and did not come up with any hits for "Sailing Movies". It would be interesting to have a list of movies that feature sailing.

Here's some of my favorites:

Wind
White Squall

Since I and the Admiral have a huge library of collectable movies, old and new (all clean), I've been collecting sailing topic movies a long time. I'll suggest a few --

You must see:

"Truth About Spring",
"Captains Courageous",
--if ever you want to see a tough sailing gal, and a real hoot, check out, "Cuthroat Island" (funny stuff)
"Captain Ron" (already suggested, seems to be everyone's favorite. Great fun)

Dont forget some of the older films:

"They Were Expendable" John Wayne (action, PT boats)
"Run Silent, Run Deep" (good submarine stuff)
"Wake of the Red Witch" (classic stuff)
"The Dove" -- produced by Gregory Peck, based on a true story. Circumnavagation aboard a 23' Ranger Sail Boat.
"Voyage of the Yes"

And, OF COURSE, the "macGregor Factory DVD" :D Especially the latest showing of the NEW "M" in gale force winds, riding "ski-hi" waves (sorry for the exaggeration) -- but Roger shows some real "GRIT" putting an "M" in those weather conditions.

...for the kids....swallows and amazons....of course

for the adults...The weight of the water or something like that - basically an adventure on a how many different ways Elizabeth Hurley can show off her bikini, or at least parts of it...

One of our favorite scenes is from "What About Bob" when he is screaming "I SAILED!! I AM A SAILOR! I WENT SAILING, IN A BOAT, AWAY FROM THE DOCK, ON THE WATER!!!!" Great fun.

I think it was in "Summer Rental" when they have a sailing race at the end and they win becuase they hoist somebody's pants up the mast?

Don't forget "Jaws 2", where the kids somehow pitchpole a Hobie when the shark makes it's appearence.

...and "The Perfect Storm", the side story about the sailboat out near Bermuda that Karen Allen was on and they had to be rescued. That was pretty exciting to watch.

...and although not technically about sailing, it's always fun to watch all those Poseidon movies when the ship capsizes and revel at how our Mac's are self-righting.

Happy 4th of July folks!! :macm:
