New Owner looking for help

I've been looking at Macgregors for some time now. I would have liked to have a M or an X, but unfortunatly, that didn't fit the budget. I just bought a 1993 Mac 19. It had been sitting for 5 years and hopefully this weekend I'll be able to try to put together what I bought. There is no motor, so I am in the market for a used one. I would like to get something close to a 40 horse. does anyone know what length shaft this should be? It definitly needs some wax and elbow grease. I'm very excited to test it out. I have never been sailing before, but have had small fishing boats. I love the idea of the motor-sailer combo. Is there a place to price bimini tops for this model, or is it a custom order? i will also have to figure something out for a battery and wiring. It looks like every thing has been stripped out of this boat. For the most part it looks like everything else is there except for nuts and bolts to connect all the sailing gear. I paid $2,500 for this boat with a trailer. Is that a fair price? I saw this boat on our local Craigs list and bought it on the spot. Any input or suggestions would be great. Wish me luck. Also, is there a good way to patch screw holes on the boat? It looks like the previous owner must have attached everything but the kitchen sink to this boat. All the holes look to be filled with caulking.

Sounds like some work and fun in your future. I might suggest some sailing education before you hoist some sails. You didn't mention sails/rigging. How is that?

Wiring might be best done from scratch anyway.

Fair price for a motorless boat but sounds like it needs some work.
For the motor a new 40 would run more than the boat already cost... estimate 1-2 K bucks per 10HP new.
Used you could do better but I don't see much in the way of used 40HPs often. There should be some 9.9 to 25 models and that would get you on the water and 9.9s resell pretty easily if you wanted to upgrade later.
I'd be inclined to put a decent 9.9 on it with remote controls and a generator to charge your battery and get out there and sail, but that's me.

If you plan to use it as a go fast boat you'll need the 40. in this economy it's kind of a buyers market for motors.
Fiberglass can pretty much be made to look new if ya know how. Holes scratches and dings are repairable. color matching is another story... Bluewater Yachts probably has the factory gelcoat color you want.

Mac wiring has always been pretty simple, like lamp cord some switches and a battery. A lot can be done to improve there, check the mods section here. These boats only came with nav lghts, some interior lights and a plug for a mast light.
Ideally someone in your area could help rig and launch the first time and give you some sailing pointers.

About plugging the old screw holes...dig out the calking and make up a putty with fibreglass resin, the proper amount of hardener and add cheap talcum powder until to reach the right consistency...still sticky but will not run. Slightly overfill all the holes with a small spatula..let it set 24 hours and sandpaper back to a flat smooth surface. If the gelcoat colour is faded, consider a total going over with new gelcoat...its available in many colours...all you do is add hardener to small amount of gelcoat and paint it on with a good brush...and have fibreglass cleaner handy for cleaning the brushes. A good measure amount will fill a two litre icecream container up the the top of where the bottom curves up...about 3/8 of an inch, certainly not over 1/2 inch. Otherwise it goes 'off' too soon. Brush practice will get the surface smooth. You cannot sand smooth the final finish...it has to remain as you put it on with the brush...then it sets smooth...
Don't forget to prepare the surface of the job before starting the painting. De wax and sandpaper.

Refining the formula a bit

2kUSD for the first 10 HP, 1k for each additional 10 HP roughly...good up to 60 HP or so, then gets a bit cheaper

When you cross the 25-30 HP threshold new, you will find they will only sell you the motor with an installation - depending on manufacturer.

Putting the boat together can be fun. When done it will be the boat you want not the same ole from the factory design. The prices mentioned for the motor must be for a new one. I just bought a 2006, 50 Merc for $2900. It has one hour on it. You need a long shaft (20") motor. Unless you want to go fast I'd get a 9.9 -25 hp. I had a 25 merc on my X and it moved me at 5-7 mph depending on conditions. Remote control , long shaft 25s are hard to find (used) and can be pricey since they are a popular small pontoon and fishing engine.

Speed isn't the only reason for a higher HP motor. Even if you aren't into going
fast(er), also consider the torque needed to move a boat loaded heavy for cruising,
or if you are going to be motoring against tidal currents and wind / waves.

It's a cool boat. It should be easy to fix up.
Since it doesn't have wheel steering, I wonder how you steer it under high speed power.

I had a 25 merc on my X and it moved me at 5-7 mph

I know the boats are different but I have a Yamaha 9.9 high torque on my 26s and it will push it at 6-7kts GPS.

You can get a good used eng. from I-Boats 10months old for half price
the original came as a 3/4 rig & mast rotation , but was vastly underpowered by sail so they made the later models masthead rigs with spreaders & bigger sails for more power but they are still underpowered by sail but that is a good thing if you are a beginner to sailing ! she is a great little boat with a huge cabin for a 19ft boat

Sounds like you picked up a good deal. Hope the boat has no "hidden" issues, but that'll be no problem, Macs are EASY to fix and upgrade.

There is a retired-elderly Cardiologist at a "mast up" marina nearby my slipped Mac-X. This guy and his admiral are on the water often, and really enjoy their Mac-19. Their Mac-19 is powered by the original 40 hp Tohatsu. He recently "brush painted" his steel trailer with rustoleum...turned out fantastic. He told me stories of trailering this M-19 all the way to Florida in the past, and even to distant points West.
