What is your boat's history?

I have been doing some research on the historical ownership of my newly aquired 1972 V22. I was able to find a previous owner after some searching on the internet. After making contact I found out that although my boat has ended up in Kansas, it began it's sailing career on the California coast and that it may have been used to transport (smuggle) illicit cargo from south of the boarder. A previous owner about 5 times removed, actually found a fairly large quantity of marijuana tucked way under the port side berth. It had apparently been forgotten by the previous owner!

So, I now know that she has seen the saltwater and had an affair with pirates (sort of). I also learned a great deal on what was or wasn't modified, painted, rebuilt, restored and the reasons behind all. It has truly been a bonding process to get to know what this old girl has seen over the years. I am even more motivated now to restore with purpose. I look forward to taking folks for a sail and while I have a captive audience, telling tales of the high adventures that this little sailor has had.... perhaps with a little embellishment here and there What history does your boat come with?

Bossa Nova had nowhere near such a checkered career, but she did come with a bit of tragedy attached to her.

I bought her from her first owner, who had co-owned her with his first wife - now deceased; his current wife gets seasick watching the masts sway in a marina while she's sitting on dry land, so the boat had to go. In order to get Bossa Nova registered in my name, I had to have more than just his signature on the title. I also needed a letter from his lender showing the lien was paid off and free; plus I had to have a death-certificate to prove that his first wife was no longer part-owner of the boat. The death certificate showed that she'd died from an overdose of barbiturates, with contributing factors of long-term intractible pain (don't remember why) and depression. Once in a while I pray for her soul ....

My '72 V222 has seen a very active history; but to tell it all here would be too long, so I'll just give a kind of timeline:

1972-1978 - Original owner. A lawyer who sailed the boat on or around the Chesapeake. Is said to have towed the boat using a Chevy Nova.

1978-1986 - My grandfather bought the boat in 1978 and kept it on the Hudson River, in the vicinity of the Tappan Zee Bridge. As far as I know, he did most of his sailing on the Hudson with this boat. He gave the boat to my dad when he switched up to an O'Day 28.

1986-2005 - My father got the boat from my grandfather, selling a small tri hull motor boat to make room for the Venture. End of salt & brackish water exposure; start of freshwater only. The main sailing location became Onieda Lake, upstate NY. Interior remodeled and spreader lights added, both right away. In 1992, trailering accident due to tongue weight/marginal tires ocurred that nearly totalled the boat (however, only scratches to the hull, no mast damage, very little deck damage, and damage to deck fixtures). Boat was repaired and sailing again in a month and a half, although with some scars here and there. Lack of time left the boat in the back yard and out of use from about 1998-2005.

2005-2008 - My dad gave me permission to fix the boat back up and use it as much as I wanted. So began a lot of cleanup, re-repairs, and my work in trying to restore the boat back to something close to what it was before the accident. Boat has been in a slip every season since 2005 on Oneida Lake. Interior refurbished Spring '08, along with new running rigging and tackle.

2008-2010 - Boat became mine in September '08, when my dad bought an S2. Replaced keel pivot bolt and cable in '09. In 2010, bottom painted the boat and bought new mainsail, replacement pop top (old one is damaged), and replacement forward hatch (original style, to replace cracked original). I plan to overhaul the fiberglass-encapsulated keel at the end of this season. This year marks 32 years that the boat has been in the family.

Hahaha...you could make a maxim out of it...."if one leaves the door open, someone is bound to barrel through it," or something like that.

With some of the horror stories I constantly see & hear about drunk boaters causing death and destruction on the water, I think I would much rather be surrounded on the water by reefernaughts than the out of control drunk boaters. Rob

That's a very interesting past. I always thought they used fast power boats, but it would make more sense to use a sailboat. Who would figure a sailboat owner for a smuggler?

I bought my boat new, but it was first used in the Seattle Boat show by BWY's. I guess she had a lot of people walking on her. Cheryl said one rather LARGE man was coming up out of the cabin and grabbed for the pedestal rail to brace him from falling. She was certain it was going to break. That's about as interesting of a past as I have.

It would be very cool if every owner kept detailed logs of their experiences and kept it with the boat. We all have our own stories. Imagine what the previous owners did.
