Homeowners Insurance?

Post by GregR »

One of the things Roger Mac sells in his 26M video is that this boat can "often be covered under your existing homeowners insurance". I have not checked with my insurance agent, but I have some reservations about this.

Has anyone actually got their Mac 26 covered under their homeowners insurance? Any "experiences" with having a claim?

It may be true. You need to read the fine print. What does the homeowners ins. actually cover?

I don't want to trust my boat to a homeowners policy. It may be covered but I don't care. For $300/year I'm insured with a company that understands boats. Peace of mind.

I can't imagine they'd cover it unless you had a rider on the policy for it... and that's gonna cost ya.

But to be sure, I'll wait for the insurance agents on this board to ring-in though.

Yes, my boat is covered under my home insurance, for just over $400 more per year they cover it as an addition to home policy. :o
Making a claim? No, then my rates would go up. :?

150 rider with State Farm. Agent said I can go anywhere and be covered, as long as I dont slip it (I keep in driveway)

Apparently on land/marina loss is the bulk of claims, so they dont care if I take it Nantucket...they must not have ever seen me sailing.... :D :D :D

I think this is going to vary widely based on State and company. In Florida and State Farm, the answer is no for homeowners insurance.

I have insurance via BoatUS.

Our :macx: is insured by the same company as our home and vehicles, USAA, but on a separate policy. I guess this gives me a bulk discount of some sort.

Your home owner's insurance might cover damage to your boat if a tree fell on it while it was parked on your property but probably not for anything that happened to it (or someone else) on the road or on the water. You definitely want to get a separate boat policy. Amica covers my house, vehicles and both boats, so I get a multi-line discount. It's about $150 a year for the Mac and covers the boat, motor and trailer. Towing on land and water is included, not that I've needed either, but I figure it is only a matter of time. I've had two claims-one for damage to my mast while the boat was stored in a boat yard, and one for theft of the replacement mast. No problems with either and my premiums did not go up. Luckily I'm close to Blue Water, and they had replacement masts in stock. Since the boat yard hasn't been secure, I'm buying a boat house in a gated marina. That has turned out to be an insurance conundrum-any ideas?

I've never heard anyone complain about being over insured. Can't say the same for the opposite. I don't trust my ins. agent as they may not be properly informed or understand my question. You still have to read the policy. If you have to make a claim, will your insurance company understand the claim? If buying separate insurance (like my BoatUS policy) make sure you understand it also and are insured to where you need to be.

Also, an umbrella policy is dirt cheap for what you get. A one $ million policy can be as cheap as a hundred bucks and covers you for auto/home/boat liability. Considering how many lawyers we have in America it also provides some peace of mind.

When I mentioned this to my agent last year, he responded "I've never heard of a provision like that in a homeowner's policy." He did offer to write a separate policy though.

Probably another bit similar to "24 MPH under power..."

LMAO :D

Neither did my agent. So he wrote a separate policy. In fact, my marina insists on a marine boat policy, with at least $500,000 liability coverage.

I called USAA for insurance back in 2007 and I ended up with a Progressive policy...not a USAA policy. All my cars and my renters insurance is with USAA.

I have since switched to BoatUS...more coverage...a little bit lower price. And of course get the Trailering Insurance as well...only $19.95 a year I think.

Cheers,
Jim

Yea, your homeowners might cover "liability" within the 25hp rule. :)

Maybe years ago homeowners policies were different. But why give something away when you can sell it?
