When you hit 50 you start timing pee streams. Scott found this out 20 years ago.

Took my boat to the Marina that I got the motor from and we took it for a short test sail, warning horn came on right away. They checked the temp with a hand held sensor and got readings of 206 degrees at the top of the motor. Overheating for sure even though the water coming out of the pee hole wasn't too hot. They suspect something has clogged the thermostat or a defective thermostat and plan to replace it when they get the parts. Since I replaced the impeller this sounds logical since I hadn't thought of a plugged thermostat.

SHS,

I am guessing that must be my problem as well. Will find out next weekend.

Stephen,

I have a manual I ordered from boats.com. But thanks for the offer.

Got my household goods yesterday...finally!!! Spent today towing a U-haul full of older furniture down to Atlanta to furnish my son's new apartment at Georgia Tech. Tomorrow I drive back to Virginia. Lots of stuff that needs put together or put away but still hoping to get my boat ready for trailering next Saturday AM and then take to the Mercury place on my way back to the house. Will probably have to leave it there for a while.

Russ,

Yes it was overheating. The story got taken up in another thread and I never got back to this one. Turns out the "tell tale" water (aka "peeing" as I call it) won't tell you if it is overheating...I did not know that.

Turns out the temp regulator valve was broke. They replaced three total parts for about $50 but the labor and everything else was another $170 for a total of $220. Guess it could have been worse. They showed me the broke valve. Looks similar to a thermostat in a car. The piece inside the spring was broke so it wouldn't open the valve and let cooling water in or something like that...which is of course why I pay to have these things done...I don't always understand the how/why etc... of the mechanical pieces.

Took the boat straight from the shop back to my house where for the first time in three years (remember that I was in the UK the last three years...just moved back a couple of months ago) I gave it a very thorough cleaning. Unfortunately I ran out of time (and energy) and did not get it waxed...hopefully in the Spring. I also installed new GPS and sounder...had to install new wiring for both of those. Also rewired the trailer and replaced all the lights...now all my lights (including the the orange side lights) work for the first time in over three years. The side lights have been out for pretty much ever and since December when I flew back and trailered to Mississippi for Christmas the left tail light didn't work.

After 10 days took it back to the marina at Fort Belvoir today. My Dad and I plan to go sailing on Saturday. Will probably motor about 20 miles up into Washington DC and take a look at whatever we can see from the river and then sail back as the winds are being forecast at N-NW 8-12 knots. Temps around 70. Sounds fantastic. Can't wait.

Cheers,
Jim

Glad to hear your motor is fixed.

I'm still waiting for the dealer to get the parts. Last I heard the thermostat had arrived but the gasket was still on back order. The boat has been stored in his yard with the mast up and ready to re-launch, since the last time I posted this site, about two or three weeks ago. I can't believe that it takes this long in this day and age to get boat parts from manufacturer. This isn't the first time I've waited weeks for parts to arrive. Sometimes I think the boat industry lives in the third world. I'm hoping to get out this weekend also, but with my fingers crossed.

Jim,

I'm glad to hear that your woes are over. Welcome back and enjoy Saturday; the weather is supposed to be amazing all along the east coast. I am trying to make the Annapolis boat show this year any chance of you getting that weekend off?

Glad you finally sorted it all out Jim. The unknown is the worst. Whatever it cost, it's now behind you and you can enjoy a sail this weekend.

Now I'm starting to get pi$$ off. Just heard from the dealer today that the thermostat gasket won't be available till Oct 15th! They told me that the Mercury manufactures have back ordered 6000 gaskets, of which 1000 are already ordered for motor owners also with thermostat problems. Sounds to me like a product mistake that should be a recall. Does anybody else smell a bilge rat?
Jim I'm glad you got yours fixed in time.
Tomorrow I'm going to go check with two other Mercury dealers to see if they have any gaskets in stock.

Steve,

I wonder if your gasket is the same size as mine? If so, only 5999 left for you.

Sorry about your delay.

Is this one of those "we can't make a gasket" things to do with high-dollar marine motors that MUST have factory gaskets in it?
How many gaskets of various types have YOU guys made on the side of the road while replacing thermostats and other miscellaneous engine components??
Sounds like highway robbery to me... :x

Hooray!!!!

Back on the water today...and this time the motor worked great. Felt good to get back behind the wheel and under sail...first time since December.

Sailing on the Potomac Oct 2010

Definitely hoping to get out some more before it gets too cold.

Cheers,

And I went out again today. Another beautiful day. Prepped, launched, sailed, and recovered completely solo. Got a good four hours under sail today. Sorry for sounding so over-enthusiastic...still getting my sealegs back as I get re-acquainted with sailing and with König. I will get over this eventually (or probably not).

Built a "mounting box" for my S1 Wheel Pilot:

Image

It may be about 1/2" too tall but it works well. May make another a little shorter. But I can still see the bottom of the chartplotter if I am in the Captains seat.

Ran down and caught a couple of other sailboats...VIDEO

And then I was passed by another Mac powering down the River...VIDEO

Anybody here claim to be that Mac. Didn't see a name. It was heading South on the Potomac pretty much abeam Fort Belvoir around noon today.

Cheers,
Jim
