In answer to the question regarding the bimini and the stern rail seats being compatable - yes and no. With the bimini up there is no interference. Obviously the seats get no shade from the bimini. Anyone sitting in the stern seats has their head above the bimini and has a good view of the sails and can see forward too. The problem is if you want to fold the bimini and drop it to the rear, mine rests on the seats and you can't sit in seats unless you want the folded bimini on your lap. John L :macm:

Stern Seats/Dowsar Dodger

Post by delmitch2 »

Well that was a nice surprise!! Currently on an oil rig off Newfoundland and what do I see but my two kids sitting in the cockpit of our M off Toronto Islands!

The second picture was the week before on Lake Erie (gotta love the mobility of a Mac!).

We have the stern seats and the full cockpit enclosure from Dowsar. Love the whole package. The seats have a nice curve, very comfortable, and even have cup holders recessed into them. A fantastic product I would recommend to anyone. The dodger and bimini are also an excellent product. Definitely worth the money.

John,
Can you slide the bimini back on the tracks so that it is behind the seats when it's lowered?

Baldbaby,

There is no need to slide the bimini. It is very different than the factory bimini. In addition to it having 6'2" headroom when open, it is also fully self supporting. It has rear stand up supports that keep the aft tube up and it has a spreader bar that pushes the front tube forward. Open it stands with no straps of any kind, folded back it stands up high like a roll bar at the back of the boat. We have a bimini boot for ours that covers it and cleans everything up when folded back. This keeps it completely out of the way when you don't want it open yet still allows you to lift the helm seat and access the transom area.

It isn't even mounted to the fiberglass cockpit deck. It is attached to the rear pulpit rail in the case of an X and to the rear stanchion in the case of the M. You can see this tee like fitting in the picture below.

Tampa Mac,

I haven't seen a Dowsar, or any other version of rear seats for the X. Dowsar does have their unique full enclosure for the X. You can see mine here.

Duanne.
Nice link, I haven't been to your site in awile....excellent content!

Also, your checklist is now on my hard drive, thanks! Very thoughtful, and nearly complete!

I just can't justify a full enclosure here in SOCAL, but without a doubt, Dowsar would be my choice if I needed one!

I have the Bimini that was optional from the factory, don't like it, and it has been on the boat for only 2 passages!

The factory bimini on our Whaler is also self-supporting with rear struts. Even when the bimini is not in use, it keeps our 4' Digital brand VHF antenna up high and in the clear. Plus my wife sewed up a red nylon pup tent of sorts that clips on the frame and runs between the two A frames and covers the Porta-Potti in the stern area.

I'm thinking of putting struts on our Mac bimini so we don't have to lift it up when it's not in use, to go to the back porch.

To be honest I have not tried real hard to see if there is some way to fold the bimini down as I installed the seats in November and only put the bimini up once to make sure it would fit in the up position with the new seats. I really don't use the bimini this time of year so I have not experimented with ways to fold it down. Come summer it will be a different story. Just for information the seats attach to the rear life line stantion and my bimini fits inside the life lines so it has to fold down in the area where the seat backrest and seat bottom are located. I don't think you can slide the bimini far enough forward that it will fit in front of the seats. Even if you could it would then interfere with the helm seat. I was concerned the port seat would interfere with the raised helm seat but that is not a problem. John L
