by around the world :o , I'll assume you mean Jamestown, Block Island or such... :) :) :)
Well, for my world I've already technically done it "halfway" aboard my Bristol 29.9!

Started at Bayshore LI, 03JUL04 ~1600 headed west to NY Harbor (Prop wrap 3 miles south of Jones inlet just after sunset, led to swimming in 90' of water at night playing the JAWS theme in my head!! :o )
Passed under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge by 0100, past the United Nations at 6AM (Happy 4th, not a SOUL around in the East River!!) to enter the Long Island Sound at ~0730.
Arrived at Mt Sinai Harbor about 1600. I hated that 15 horse Yanmar on that 8900 lb boat!! 1kt SOG fighting the outgoing Hudson Tide underneath the Verrazano! Seemed to take forever!! :( And THAT folks is why I FOUGHT to come back to a :macx: !! I love my power to sail ratio!! :D Sure beats making 125nm at an avg 5.02 SOG!!

Also, ZEPHYR developed a pretty substantial stuffing box leak during the night (~4 gal/30 minutes). The previous owner did not have an electric bilge pump. Needless to say, when we moored I learned how to tighten a stuffing box. The following day after that I installed an electronic bilge pump with switch! So I prefer Outboards now for two reasons...prop wraps (raise the motor!) and stuffing box issues....it always seemed like I was worrying about it, is it too tight? too loose? is the shaft bent? how's the cutlass bearing? etc.. Anyway, I digress.

So the goal now, hopefully the others in our area will as well, is to enter the annual "Around Long Island Regatta" so I may complete the circumnavigation of "my" world!!

I looked at my charts over night, and just past Block Island they say "Here Be Dragons"... Maybe I need an update...

In preparation for a longish haul out to Block and back, I've been thinking about an overnight to Faulkner's Island (off Guilford CT) (http://lighthouse.cc/faulkners/). Scenic as all heck, but a closed wild life refuge most of the year ('cept for part of September).

I'm game for other seldom visited islands that we can anchor over night at, and maybe make landings on. Also any scenic local harbors with decent(or indecent) harbor side restaurants/bars we can get to.

Ed - I would be really interested to hear your voice of experience about hull Gate...what was the tide doing when you went though there?

Eldridge had Slack was listed I think at 0621 on that day, I knew we had to be there at that time...we transited at 0632, even with the 1/2hour lost due to the aforementioned prop wrap! That was Navigating! 8)

The trip north from Governors island was slow, 3kts SOG , not as bad as the earlier trip the Narrows at 1kt. I stared at the same spot (Toys r Us) in Brooklyn for hours!!
When we hit the Gate we moved right though, calm as can be.....surreal almost. An urban canyon, dead quiet that early morning with a hint of fog. As we passed under the Triboorough now RF Kenedy Bridge, our SOG jumped to 7.5 kts! We literally shot out into Long Island Sound! :D So be aware of the current to and from that point as well as the Gate itself.

I think what saved us in making the mark at that time was leaving an hour earlier than expected, and making great time from Fire Island Inlet to the Narrows.

Since I'm bored, and I may still have peoples attention, that prop wrap off Jones Inlet? 25 feet of Yellow Poly-pro tied to a 5 Gal bucket!! Waiting to get sucked into some fools propwash (me). :x

That's why I claim Murphy's Law is a "Clear and Present Danger" in MY life!!

Anyway, there was less than 5 kts of wind that whole time forcing us to motor all the way. Again, 125 nm, 8900 lb boat 15 HP Yanmar, ~5kts avg SOG = 6 gal's of Diesel, for you fuel economist's out there. Another point to note, I passed within 100 yds of the United Nations the morning of July 4th, and later that night was the Macy's Firework Display The ONLY security I saw on the East River was a tiny unmanned NYPD Pilot house boat!!

As long as Hells Gate is timed right....if I can do it in a swollen underpowered Bristol, any Mac :macm: :macx: :mac19: (with HP of course) should have NO problem.

Safe Sailing

All CT/NY owners on the beautiful Long Island Sound......

After 10 years, a 26X, Bristol 29.9, and another 26X , the Town of "Crookhaven" (Brookhaven) has granted me my slip in Mt Sinai Harbor!

Let's form a Mac Long Island Sound Sailing Club!

Least of all let's raft up on occasion!!

Any Macgregor Sailers from Milford Connecticut here? We've kept our 2001 :macx: "Reiki Wake" on a mooring in Milford Harbor for the last 5 years. This year we've notices a "new" :macx: one mooring over from us, and another :macm: up river on another mooring, along with another long timer 26s/c. There might be the start of a mini Mac regatta.

Happy Sailing!

I'm on the Queens side of the lower, Western Long Island Sound, out of Bayside Marina. I have steady views of the Throgs Neck Bridge & City Island "Oasis of Da Bronx" in my wheel house. I didn't check how far the CT connection is, but I'm putting myself out there :) PM for contact
