Outboard Motor-mount replacement
Outboard Motor-mount replacement
Hello Friends,
There may be info about this in the forum, but I can't seem to find it. I am considering replacing the outboard motor-mount on my 1984 M25. I believe the current one is the original, but there are no tension springs and it has been repaired in the past according to the weld marks. When I put my Honda BF100 9.9hp motor in reverse, it appears to want to come up and into the cockpit and when cruising among the 1000 islands last summer it started to gurgle. When I looked, it was much lower than it should be. My question is as to whether anyone can recommend a good, reasonably-priced 4-stroke replacement mount. I'm looking at Garelick and Panther but I'm not sure how much travel I need. Any recommendations are appreciated.
Thanks

Look at the water line of your boat. That is the point that the water intake of the motor needs to be below. That intake should be 6 inches below the water surface (or water line line), more if you are usually in choppy waters. The motor coming out of the water in reverse is not caused by the motor mount. There is a pin on the motor that activates when reverse is engaged. That pin may be bent or missing on your motor. Check your owner's manual to see if the issue is addressed there.

Garelick (sp?) and Fulton are the major choices for motor mounts
You can almost count on the original manufacturer not being around on a boat of this vintage.
Other option is to fab something locally
You probably need about 14 inches of lift to get the motor out of the water
On edit - fixed spellcheck autocorrection fascination with spices...

Sorry for the double picture in previous post. I was trying to add this one:

Re: Outboard Motor-mount replacement
Thanks Cuscus,
Great pics. Thanks for going to the trouble to take them.
My current mount looks similar but there are no torsion springs or lock positions. That makes for a very heavy job! I actually had to tie it off with a rope around the stanchion & cleat last summer.
Needless to say, replacement is a definite priority!

Hi Folks,
Well, I purchased a Garelick bracket a few weeks ago and now that it is warming here in Kingston, I started to look at installing it yesterday. Not as straightforward as I thought! The bracket I bought is the 71090 with the 9.5" vertical travel. Not sure if I messed up there as catigale recommended 14" travel. It's obvious that I'm going to have to block it out from the transom a bit due to angles and the protruding rub-rail, but my neighbour and I just couldn't figure out exactly where to place it on the transom to: 1) lift the motor far enough out of the water and 2) lower it enough into the drink to work properly. I have the original Honda BF100 long-shaft. I was just wondering if anyone might have some advice? Has anyone installed this bracket on a 1984 Mac 25? Should I consider returning it in exchange for the 71091 with the 15.5-inch travel? My concern with that one is that when lowered, will it be too low to operate the throttle from the cockpit? As you can see, I'm confused! Can anyone help?

Re: Outboard Motor-mount replacement
I think you will want the longer travel. The issue of throttle from cockpit is not determined by the throw on the mount, that is determined by mount position of course.
If you are from Kingston ON sailing on Lake Ontario, you do get pretty good waves there, so I would want to be able to get that motor down deep.

Thanks again Catigale. I appreciate your advice and will look into exchanging the bracket. Regards
