26 M falls off trailer

Post by Compromise »

Hi All,
Having gone back to a power boat I still log in here a lurk occassionally.
I saw this story on the news yesterday and not sure if it's someone from this forum or not.
It did not appear from the photo it suffered too much damage, however, I would imagine the hull taking some serious scraping before stopping.
I first saw this on the local news channel but could not find the video.
Here's a link to the newspaper article.

Yikes!!!! :o :?

Looks like the bow-eye is ripped off.

Be nice to know some more details on speed and what happened. Bunks or rollers on the trailer? Any straps other than the trailer strap?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Cheers,
Jim

It would be interesting to learn if they had a strap holding the boat down :?:

Not to long ago there was a posting here about the necessity to tie down the boat when trailering. A few people had a cavalier attitude on the subject with the notion that the weight of the boat was sufficient to keep it in place.

Enough said!

I just use the port and starboard aft cleated docklines to tie down to the trailer with a trucker's hitch. Easy peasy, and it keeps the boat from bouncing on the trailer.

That's gonna leave a mark....................

Would make ya sick, but thank God no one was hurt--it's only fiberglass, and maybe the lower unit.

Hi ya Mr. Compromise...long time ! I just had to say Hi to you and yours...and let you know your previous Mac X (Exodus), still in great shape, has a new owner -- it is slipped at Watergate Marina, next door to my Marina here in Kemah, Texas. I see it nearly every weekend, everything appears original.

Thread Topic: I'll make a guess that this Mac M wasn't tied or bow strapped. I wonder if the family are members of this forum, in order to provide further details. I wonder if the hull cracked, and ballast tank, engine, and other items were damaged. An aweful mishap !
My Starboard side wheel sheared all lug bolts off my Mac X trailer, and causing lots of noise and bumping at 55 mph, the Mac stayed on the trailer just fine...not even serious damage to the trailer. An aweful experience. (a real teaching experience for correct torque lbs. on lugs).

Uh, okay, guys. What's the lesson here? Are we not adequately securing our boats to their trailers? Conventional wisdom is that the weight of the boat alone keeps it nestled securely in the trailer. What say we?

Looks like the nose ring has been pulled off. This is the first time I heard of such a mishap with the Mac. It is possible that the ring has been weakened previously and now, under stress, it gave out. Don't want to think that the nose had been broken previously, or else the guys would have had a hard time to get the Mac on the trailer--hard, but not impossible
A back strap attached to the guiding poles and hugging the transom is in order

The story leaves a lot to our imaginations....
I have traveled I - 75 no less than a few times and Never had any issues.. BUT I wasnt towing with a what might have been marginal vehicle..
""Martin said wind turbulence from a passing box truck as he was rounding a curve caused him to lose control violently, shaking the the boat off the trailer""
Humm a Box Truck? Maybe? I have never had issues with being passed by Semi Trailers both single and doubles.. all while doing anywhere between 60 to 70 MPH...
Did he forget to DoDaMacBump humm thats my first guess.. and just about the Only thing that makes sense to me..

lets get the first thing straight here. the trailers that come stock with these boats are scary as hull weak. to think anything else would be foolish.

Rider ....Mine is an 05..I Bought it New.... I Brought mine down from Chicago IL. To Port Charlotte Fla. 12/22 & 23 2009 (?) 1300 miles 2 days ..
I had No Issues. I Brought her back as well and I was hauling #$%^.. My House to North Point Marina 90 minutes ...mostly Turn Pike and Toll Way 60 mph +
I Had her in and out of salt water in Florida and fresh water here and NO Rust.. No Brake Issues.. Going into year 7 .. No Rust Issues.. 2 Bunks did rot out around the bolts and I replaced them....... ALL.. I used Treated Wood this time.. I take care of my trailer ( simple maintenance) and I defy anyone to find anything but maybe some surface rust..All My lights work as well. :D Trailer is fine.. Could it be better? Sure it could, most things can be..Lots of fellows here have bought used because the price of new is already out of reach form them.. Its about a package price.. If Money is No Object.... and you want a trailer sailor? There's really IMHO only one.. Seaward.. It is an issue $$$ for me . I'd be glad to accept a check for $140,000.00 so I too could afford a Much Nicer Much Better Boat and Trailer..
