Furler Sail Replacement Question

Post by nchogberg »

Hi Guys,

I have a 2001 26x with 150 genoa on a CDI flexi-furler. This was installed when the boat was commissioned. So I also have the factory Jib, brand new never been used. I've owned the boat since 2006 so PO had this done.

The sun and weather have really decayed the leech and the foot of the genny. We have been trying to make it blow up but it keeps hangning on and looks horrible. Bits of sail cloth shredded, leech line is flapping no longer secured in the sail cloth. Picture a ghost ship...

Can I replace the factory jib in the CDI flexi-furler? Does the bolt rope just slide into the plastic furler?

If this works I will use the jib until I can save some bucks to get another 150.

Thank you for your advice,
Nels

The manual for your FF2 furler shows how to switch sails. You can find it at
http://www.sailcdi.com/sailpdf/FF2%20manual%207_06.pdf

UV light destroys sailcloth. Most roller furling genoas have a sacrificial cover sewn onto the sail along the leech and foot to protect the sailcloth when the sail isn't being used. I usually recommend a Dacron UV edge cover for trailer sailors; DUV is far more abrasion resistant than sunbrella and therefore more suitable to trailersailors.

Alternatively, you can use a jib sock made of Odessey or Sunbrella, but, in my opinion, it's much less convenient. Be sure the jib sock has a "lace" built into it to keep it from flogging in the wind. A loose sock will self-destruct and be super noisey, keeping you and the neighbors awake

Fair winds,

As long as that jib doesnt have hanks (no relation to Tom) it will slide up the FF2 extrusion and work great.

If it has hanks you would have to take them off, and have a luff tape sewn on (#6 IIRC??)

Thank you guys. Reading the instructions I may be able to do this without lowering the mast. I hadn't realized there was a halyard inside the luff tape.

Good stuff guys.

I don't know what the life expectancy is but it served well for 9 years in Biscayne bay and one year here back in Texas.

Regards,
Nels

Nels ... I think you have it under control but

Luff tape. ... The part of the sail that feeds up the CDI plastic extrusion

The halyard is in the extrusion ( grey plastic)

Good luck understanding the CDI manual! It uses technical terms with no translation and the photos and diagrams are not very good. I'm just going to invite a friend who is a highly experienced sailor for a drink on the boat and ask him to help me put my job on the CDI flexible furler. I couldn't understand that manual at all.
