Were the new ones Dowsar gave you actually longer than the old cables?

No. They gave me identical 14ft cables. Can't believe my measurement was off by 40%!!

Installed em in 2 hours. Only tricky bit was getting them around that bend and out the through-hull in the transom. Argh. That space being full of styroform flotation did not help matters.

Anyway, I took er out to test them and revved er up to 13.5 knots. 8) Wheeeeee!

But omg she steers like a wallowing pig...

Go for some steering modes. DVD disks with silicone spray at the rudder pivot really helps when tighten'd. Tighten down or shim the interior steerimg arms. Do the full monty!
