Re: Custom Paint Job for my 26M
I've learned that you don't live in your house or own a car or boat thinking about resale value. Sure, you don't install that firepole from your bedroom to the living room if you expect to move in 5 years, but within reason you need to enjoy using the things you own.
So I like your paint job and can't wait to see it. Although we own a blue M, I think a hunter green would look cool also. I saw a yellow Mac that looked sharp.
Are you going to paint the mast black like your photo? That would be cool also.
You must share the final product here as we are all anxious to see something original. Erik's Mac is pretty cool too.

Nice job on your boat, I like the pirate version me self
All:
With regards on my paint scheme, I am definitely stepping out and making the boat my own like I have done with nearly everything I've "owned". I can imagine if you do not plan on "keeping" it, then you are essentially "renting" it and would not want to make such a permanent / irreversible modification like painting a gel coat / fiberglass sail boat. The Admiral says even when we get our big Caribbean cruising boat she does not ever want to part with the
The custom paint choice for me is simple; I wanted to make something on the water that you just don't see everyday. Mainly because no one would be stupid enough to put a $15.000 paint job on a $20,000 boat. By doing the project myself I only have about $3,000 in material, but I will have nearly 500 man hours into the disassembly, painting, and reassembly of the boat. Luckily, I work for free. I've used a 2-part base coat / clear coat polyurethane - by Glasurit. So far I am very pleased with the finish. The plan is to wet sand and buff the entire boat to get a nice mirror finish.
Even though I bought a few extra fenders to pretect the boat, I'm sure I'll bang it into the doc the first time out. But luckily I know how to fix any little scratch (or big hole for that matter) that might come along. Working on the boat is quite therapeutical to me, and when I'm relaxing on the water I will feel quite proud about my sweet MacGerogor with the custom paint job.

One can buy a boat as an investment for resale
, or one can have a boat that suits their needs and desires
. Good luck with your creative expression on this blank canvas!

Hey Chris,
The wood grain was only temporary for the ncsail.org pirate fest. http://www.enctrader.com/ncsail My wife and I made the black sail out of a nylon type fabic from the fabric store... it really does work.
Something I thought of... if you go with vinyl on the design... if you don't like it you can always peel it off... not so much with paint.
Good Luck
Erik

OK... I finally got to my other computer were I've stored my CAD files for the paint schemes which I have developed for my
. Here is a converted picture of the color drawing we have been working off of to paint the boat:

Also the Admiral had me post to the "Admiral's Galley" a few photos of her new paint job - which gives a sneak peak of how my project is progressing:

Once I get everything together I will take a few post worthy images of entire boat. Even with two weeks off of work that I took I couldn't get her into the water - but I know I'm only a weekend ot two away now.

Re: Custom Paint Job for my 26M
Erik--What did this cost? I'm considering putting vinyl over the black on my deck to keep them from fading. Any issues with the vinyl coming off at the waterline or anything? How long does it last? Would it make sense to use a vinyl wrap as UV protection with the intent of replacing it every few years vice waxing annually? I just don't know anything about the stuff.Erik Hardtle wrote:I did not use paint, I used vinyl to give mya unique look.

It's all about location!
The black stripes on top take the sun's rays straight on and you can tell by how "hot" they get. Some make covers and I am considering that (living in Florida). My letters on the side of the boat are vinyl and as you have stated, show no sun damage. The same goes for the black water line stripe.
Putting vinyl over your black stripes will subject the vinyl to the same sun hit as you black stripes and the sun will eat the vinyl alive. Removing and replacing sounds expensive and not fun. vinyl on the sides of the boat would work fine but gelcoat would be better.
My suggestion - do what I did and buy a buffer (I got the Shurhold) and make it at least "easy" work.
I want to see a custom paint job with Shark's Teeth!

Re: Custom Paint Job for my 26M
It has been almost a month since I rolled Sheilagene 2 out of my shop and over to my garage. Of course everything takes longer than expected. I have found that it was easy to pull off all the lifelines, winches etc... but very time consuming to clean the old sealant and polish the parts before gluing them back on. I finally have a little time to post a few pictures of the new paint job.
Here is the boat emerging from my Hangar:
