What Do You Wear On Your Feet When Sailing?

Post by GaryMayo »

I always wear black leather running shoes to do most everything. I guess I should give up leather for something more robust in water. I wear pretty large footwear, and the Catalogs have nothing in boating shoes this time of year. Spring is around the corner I reckon.

Sperry Topsider makes an athletic deck shoe that is good for yachting. It is not a club shoe and it is not a dinghy sailor's boot. I am a big guy and I need traction between the shoe and the deck and the shoe and my foot so no hiking sandals or whatever. For me, low white socks, and my Sperrys. Wore them 4 days straight in a distance race. No fatigue. Well, non in my feet.

Usually nothing. Shoes get horribly nasty going from the dinghy to land and rounding up the dogs from the water. I use slip on sandals and leave them when I board the boat. I do sail In a warm climate though.

I usually wear inexpensive running or all purpose type shoes with non marking soles, like from Wal Mart. They're comfortable, inexpensive, and they have good arch support. I've found that some boating shoes assume you have a decent arch -- I don't.

Sperry topsiders or Vans Barcaderos (cheap version of the sperry's). Our backup on board are Crocks - ugly but cheap, dry and grippy. The admiral is an extremist -either barefoot mostly or trapeze boots when racing or things get extreme. When she's barefoot I have to kill the spiders :)

Recently I got a pair of Vibram five finger shoes and find them excellent for use on the boat. They provide more traction while on the decks than anything I have worn in the past. They do take a little getting use to.

last time I was on a big boat, one of the crew had some 'shoes' that had toes like that... but blue in color, and reportedly were great...

looked like this:

Either white sneakers with white soles, aqua slippers (most), or nothing.

I wear a pair of "modern" boat shoes I picked up at West Marine. Normal enough looking to wear off the boat, also a water shoe (no socks) and rubber soles that don't slip. I have a pair of vibrams and also wear them, they work well but the transition from sole material to top webbing rubs a sore on my toes. I'm a delicate flower, I know.
