Cowling rain baffle on tohatsu 9.8

Post by tubeydude »

Hi all.

I had a great sailing summer getting to know my Mac 25 which was brought back in no small part due to the wealth of knowledge and help here.

So the rains are starting to show up. I am getting ready to pull the boat out this weekend, and was noticing that the cowl/cover on my 9.8 has no baffle where the handhold/air intake is on the back/top of the motor. When I tilt the motor up to get it out of the water when in the slip, I can see straight thru to the cylinder heads and spark plug wires... This can't be right. So I call tohatsu and the tech explains to me that sure enough, there should be a baffle there that prevents rain from entering but will allow air to enter.

However, that neat little baffle is not broken out as a separate part and therefore is not buyable... He says the only way to get it is to buy a whole new upper cowl/cover. This is a 2-3 hundred dollar part. If I can't find one I'm going to go DIY on this one for sure.

So two things:
1) Does anybody happen to have one from a bad motor for sale?
2) Can somebody with a 2005-ish tohatsu 9.8 take a couple of pictures of the baffle inside the top/rear of the cowl?

I appreciate any help you guys can offer.

Thanks,

Erik

I took some pictures of ours and will try and post them tonight.

Basically most of the baffle is cast into the housing itself. The only removable part is a flat cover with a rubber gasket/seal on one side and it is held on with 4 screws. If you see the 4 screw holes then I'd just make a plate to fit that area.

Check out the last 5 pictures here....

...hope that helps. Most of it is cast into the cover. Just one one piece is separate. Let me know if you need more and good luck,

Thanks for the pics. It's very clear. I'll see what I can do to make it functional again.

Have a good one.

Small piece of wood would make this up nicely. Or, have you considered an engine cover ...not a bad idea in sunny SOCal?

So an update is in order. I called Tohatsu in TX. They told me that they can't sell that part by itself as it is not broken out of the cowling part separately. After a while of discussing options, he told me that from time to time they get motors back that have been damaged broken, etc... and that they may have that part in the future.

Well... I called last week and they had one! Last Friday I got it, it fits and I am a happy customer.

It makes me glad that there are still companies that care about customer service. I'm very glad to have my Tohatsu.

I just wanted to let you all know!

That is good news.

Hope you don't mind if I mention a good experience also. On Lake Powell when we were in the big wind storm...

.. at the same time I was hurt the wind picked the dinghy up off the water and threw the ....

.... gas tank onto the rocks. Somehow the cap came off the tank and disappeared. When I got home I call them to see if I could order another one. The gal on the phone said wait a minute and then came back on the phone and said "I have one give me your address and I'll send it" .

There was no charge and I was impressed like you,
