Stern rail for the M

Post by mtc »

Anyone mount a stern rail on the boat? I've seen the rail/seats from BWY at $500. Yikes!, but they sure do look like they'd help with my daughter!

There's some images on the mod postings. I just wondered if anyone has mounted them or another stern rail and would share their experiences.

You guys are great! I laugh so much at some of these comments. Thanks for the smiles.

Mounted the stern rail seats from BWM yep 500.00 but as far as installing them was real easy. BWM gives you everything needed. except the 5200.
You do have to drill 2 inch holes in your boat to get to the backing bolts.

aya,

I guess you just installed inspection ports then to access the bolts. They were included? Probably not.

Are you happy with the addition? At $250 a seat, my ergonomic office chair was half the cost, but we're talking about boat parts here, right?

Would you say the rails give you the security of a stern rail? Are the seats secure enough to let my 13 yr old sit on them? Doubt I'll place my 215# butt on them. . . :o

I guess, my lovely bride would be ok too as she weighs in at a mere 110#. They look excellent and I want them! What was the shipping costs? Just wondering, I'm across the country - probably the maximum.

Wonder if I should just fabricate them; time, materials, more time. . . fix the boat/sail the boat/fix the boat/sail the boat. . .

Do you have any photos of the rails on your boat? I'd love to see them if possible. And, forgive me if it's obvious in the posting, but you did mount them on an M, right? I can't see the posting while in the reply frame.

I used the search function and found lots of links to threads, but didn't find the post you're referring to. Can you remember the title?

MTC yes bwm sends the plugs that you will need to cover the 2 inch holes. everything but the 5200

They are very strong stand on them lean they dont move. There is a picture of them along with my BBQ in another section

Yes on the M. 215 pounds I say no problem they are very secure.

happy yes.

I think they are priced about right as far as trying to make them the time and parts you would need to do it makes them a bargain.

I have the BWY stern rail seats on my M. I weight in at 225, and feel very safe in the seats. When my sons have the helm under power they like to run it full out, and in a 3-4 ft swells they feel solid as a rock.

The only problem I had noticed was that the rail in the back gets very uncomfortable when you are in rough water, and constantly hitting it. I solved that problem by buying stern rail back cushions from macgregorowners.com see link below. I had them customize the cushions because I did not want to get the wrap around cushions that attach together with velcro. I had them sew the canvas so I could slip it over the entire length of the back rail from where it meets the lifeline stanchion to where it meets the seat on the aft side - see 2nd link to BWY.

It takes a little longer to get them on than velcro, but they will never fall off.

The folks at Macgregorowners.com did an excellent job, did not charge extra, and I now sit on my Captains chair in comfort and direct my crew as needed.

elia,

Welcome aboard - a couple of questions . . . what motor do you have?
How's your weight affect bow-up attitude under power?
How far aft does the rail seat concentrate your weight, about at the transom?

I'd have thought it would be crippling. No offense, but if the boat can handle another 200# on the aft coaming, I wonder why we debate an outboard weighing an extra 120" or so, with so much concern? (strictly rhetorical question).

Frank, you also have to recognize the M has a LOT less water ballast aft than the X:
Image
It's like this all the way forward to the aft dinette seat. I suspect this is one change done in recognition of the weight of the 50HP four-strokes that will be used on the M versus the roughly 160 lb 50HP two-stroke Tohatsu the X was designed for.

Frank,

I am running a Honda 50.

When I am in sitting in the Stern seats I have not really noticed any diffrence in the attitude of the bow, but than again I have not specifically looked for that. I will make a note to check it out in the spring.

When I am in the seats my stern is aft and outboard see attached picture

Thanks elia ... that picture sure answers my question!

Yep guys, I knew that the 26M was the subject matter, but didn't realize that ballast had changed so significantly.

That's all the more reason to put a 70 hp (minimum) on the M ... otherwise that blue hull is so fast .... she'll just be burnin' rudder :!:

Those of us running DF50s and BigFoot 50/60s to get EFI can't really help it that we're probably 80-100 lbs over the X motor design weight. Given that the M was probably designed around the BigFoot (look at the factory M photos), and that there's a 60HP version that should offset the loss to the deeper-V (or go beyond that), with no additional weight penalty, M buyers more interested in sailing than powering may want to look at that, or the Yamaha 60 High-Thrust equivalent, for balance purposes.

For those who can't figure out when I'm conjecturing, I have emphasized "probably."

aya16,

I noticed that the 'captian' seat on the M in your photo seem like it would hit the rail seat when raised. How does it clear?

Also, any bimini complications? I understand that bwy also fabs a bimini for the mac that is integral to the rail seats. Do you have that, or is yours stock? (If you have one at all)

aya16,
can you post a photo of the back of the seat? I am considering ordering these seats and would love to see the back of the seat and hear more about the install. What is the purpose of the 2" hole?
