Best way to beat energy costs IMHO is to live in a place which is temperate but doesn't require you to travel for everything....ruling out most of the suburbs of course.

Venezuela? I had no idea.
Hmmmm. Yes, this could easily get political. Somebody is getting royally screwed.
I plan to tow my Mac a long way, so gas prices are a concern for me.

My girlfriend is from Venezuela and her family visits often. Designer clothes are cheap here, comparatively, but I don't wear those !! I wonder how hard it would be to get the government there to let me go to work for her family down there

I think it's time to get a work Visa and a change of scenery...

There's been many a thread on this on other forums and some have filled up successfully and others aren't here to tell the story any more. Most feel it's too risky and there's no bailout if you get in trouble.

With over half it's population living in squalor that we cannot even imagine, I don't think they see it as a great deal. In fact, these very people risk everything to illegally enter America for the lowest paying jobs we have. Not sure there's much traffic in the other direction!

I recently met a guy who cruised for 3 years. He told me that the most interesting part of his experience was what people talked about in each country when you struck up a conversation with them . For example in Canada within 2 minutes Canadians start talking about the weather, in France food and in Venezuela....personal security.

My girlfriends brother has 4 bodyguards on payroll and her father 7... They don't go anywhere without them. All in all, I'd be willing to risk it; they'll keep me safe!! I kinda like the idea of having bodyguards- will really work to keep the ex away from me!!

As someone that grew up in Caracas I had to comment on this one. Gas prices over there are about 20 cents per gallon so the $4 for a full tank for a Suburban sounds about right if not a little high. That is due to a populist tradition of heavily subsidizing it (selling below cost). In the late 90’s the president at the time was about to change this subsidy (among other recommendations from the IMF) and ended up having a coup d'état. BTW, good luck finding a new Suburban over there unless it is an “official vehicle”. Bodyguards are also a relatively cheap commodity, but most people just add bulletproof glasses to their cars and hope that they don’t get kidnapped.

Forget the cost of the object. How much work does it take to buy it? If you only get paid a buck an hour then you haven't really gained anything if your are making around 12 dollars here. Plus you still have to hire body guards.
And what about the roads there? How are they compared to the roads in the US?

If you make it all the way down to Trinidad in the Lesser Antilles, you are not too far from the delta of the Orinoco river, you can follow the river and enter the Canaima National park where the Angel Falls are located. If you saw the Disney movie "UP", you know what I am talking about.
