Refused Insurance

Post by yawlboy »

I was looking online for an insurance quote for my 2000 26X with 50HP Yamaha. When I noticed this statement on the Allianz website:
Vessels Not Covered - Catamarans and all other Multihulled Vessels, Jet Skis, House Boat, Ferro Cement Hull, McGregor, Monterey, vessels constructed from Carbon Fibre, Foam Core GRP, Scrimp, Foam Core GRP and one off design vessels.
I thought this was a bit strange so I rang them and was told that they will not insure MacGregor boats, period. Apparently it is due to the fact that
"MacGregors use water ballast, which causes osmosis".
:x

I'm with a different insurer and they will renew no problem so I am not worried about getting insurance, however I think it is a little strange that a major company like Allianz is refusing to insure Mac's.

Tell them you have a MacGregor - not a McGregor (kind of sounds like they will not insure a boat built under the golden arches :P )

So I guess they also don't insure those Catalina sailboats that use water ballast (250 mkII)? And what's the deal with catamarans?

Inquiring minds want to know.

EVERY... Insurance Company has its No Go List.. Be it a Type of Car, Motorcycle, Boat, Plane, Dog.... House .. Then add in Locations they consider a NO GO....
I have insured everything I own ( all but a plane sad to say :( ) with State Farm and Country Companies..
Country Companies will not insure ANYTHING in Florida...
If the reason is Osmosis v Water Ballast ?? Then that shows how little they know about what they are talking about..
Your the first in 7 years to bring up this issue..

That statement, if true, would be enough to convince me not to seek coverage of any marine vessel from this company

If there is such a profound lack of knowledge about boats, how do you think a claim will be processed?

Yeah I don't think the MacGregor 65 uses water ballast.

Particularly risk averse insurers just write off any vessel type they've had to pay a claim on. Somebody once made them pay to repair a Mac with blisters, and so they wrote off insuring them. If that list gets any longer, they won't be in the boat insurance business at all.

Exactly!!!

Some homeowners policies will cover boats under 26' (X & Ms are 25' 10"). I didn't even bother to check mine because I want an insurance company that knows boats. That's one reason I went with BoatUS insurance.

Wow... you're right... never heard of that one!
Ford Explorer Ban

U-Haul does not rent trailers intended to be attached to a Ford Explorer. According to U-Haul: "U-Haul has chosen not to rent behind this tow vehicle based on our history of excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations. This policy does not involve safety issues. This is an unusual circumstance for U-Haul." This applies to all production years and models (for example, this ban includes the Ford Explorer Sport Trac) of the Explorer, regardless of tire brand that is attached. This comes from many accidents involving Bridgestone or Firestone tires. This ban does not apply to related vehicles such as the Mercury Mountaineer, Lincoln Aviator, or Mazda Navajo despite that are all mechanically identical to the Ford Explorer.

We have State Farm and they don't have an issue with our Mac 26 in or out of the water. Coming back from Havasu this year we hit ice and high cross winds just north of Rawlins, Wy.; we spun out of control barely missing an oncoming semi and ended up in the ditch with a totaled trailer and a damaged boat. The insurance covered towing, storage, trailer and boat.
