Re: 1972 V21 new owner
the water is all pumped out with a portable sump pump. It took about 4 hrs. I worked on the link. Hopefully his one will work. I will have some newer interior pictures soon. I am going to get all the foam and everything else out that is not attached.

Looks like a fun project. That rudder looks like toast, but at least you have enough of a model to build a new one.
Steph's idea of drilling a drain hole for cleaning might not be a bad idea.
Cleaning the slime off the bottom of my boat has been a chore for years. I dread haul out for that reason. This year, I found this stuff in my garage and tried it on the bottom and it literally melted the slime away. It's mostly bleach and cleaner that I sprayed on with a garden sprayer. I then took a sponge mop and hosed it all clean as new again. You might give it a try. Finish with a power washer. Use lots of ventilation.
For composite decks. Was only $7 a gallon.

Did you get the Boat free? its pretty far gone in my opinion unless you really just want the satisfaction of rebuilding her (nothing wrong with that) there is a lot of gelcoat delamination but top paint could replace it after sanding off the loose stuff just for Kicks I would check craigslist.org for maybe a less far gone project there was someone near me Literally giving away a venture 25 in better condition than that BUT that trailer looks pretty good just make sure the project fits your skills and budget (nothing worse than almost complete and then busted)

Oh - just 600 gallonsHandsomebob wrote:Probably was not 1/3 full of water but I would say 600 gallons.
I understand you are a new owner but there is one general rule of thumb we try to follow -
THE WATER GOES ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE HULL
And I thought I took on extreme rebuild projects!
Best of luck and I hope your enthusiasm hold up (before you find a stash of "FREE" explosives).

Re: 1972 V21 new owner
because I am a neebie I want to thank all the folks for their tips. Robert8.....thanks for the reality slap. The boat is free and I have a friend with a farm 20 minutes from the club and he said I can work on it in his barn. I need to focus on sailing and get on the water and not behind a pressure washer, grinder, shop vac, fiberglass repair, primer, sanding, painting, gas money and new hardware tools. Before finding this boat I was planning on buying a Snipe. There are 3 for sale at the club. I will fill you guys in. I will send some pics now that this post is #10 post.RobertB wrote:Oh - just 600 gallonsHandsomebob wrote:Probably was not 1/3 full of water but I would say 600 gallons.![]()

http://mobile.craigslist.org/boa/3210212560.html
this won offer $2000 the custom trailer is all wrong
http://pensacola.craigslist.org/boa/3240602829.html
This is like my boat and actually $10000 is a GREAT Price but Hey hit them at $7000 you can always go up
http://okaloosa.craigslist.org/boa/3296724280.html

Re: 1972 V21 new owner
The keel is the big worry on that boat IMHO. With all that water around, it is a cinch the keel I probably rusty and jammed up. These 600 pound chucks of steel are difficult to get off the boat and fix, so plan the restore around that.

going to start building a new rudder. I don't think I want to glass it. only day sailing and it will not sit in the water. what kind of wood, stain, finish, clear coat etc.....

Re: 1972 V21 new owner
Well , I did not really lose my enthusiasm but ended up buying a Snipe last week and am going to concentrate on that for now. I sailed it last weekend and it needs no major work. I need to be out on the water learning and not working on a project.
I am going to keep the boat and maybe do something with it one day or give it to someone else who has time.
thanks for all the advice

Re: 1972 V21 new owner
when i started my restoration my boat looked similar to that
2 years later she hit the water for the first time in maybe 30 years (other than that the only water she saw was a few hundred gallons in her hull from sitting)
I had her out last weekend and other than finding a hairline crack in the hull that allowed in water she sailed fantastic!
concentrait on keel first!!!! I can't stress that enough, the keel took longer to remove and fabricate than anything else.
The v21 keel weighs about 400 lbs and is easy to reproduce with 3/4" scrap steel plate if it's too far gone (can build a new one for 200-300 bucks if you do it yourself)
Then go on to paint, build rutter, rigging, sails, interior and all the accessories that makes a boat more comfortable.
I can't stress enough...start with keel first!!!
