Buy gas in the winter and use it in the summer?
Gas in in nw Indiana is now $3.19 a gallon - down from nearly $4 a gallon a month ago. Apparently "winter" gas in cheaper than "summer" gas. So, is it viable to buy gas in the winter with an eye towards using it in the summer?

wow........ $3.19 I can't recall gas being that low in a long time. We were at $4.60 a week ago and not we're way down at $3.90 seems to be about as low as we get these days. Can never quite figure the regional differences especiall when we leave the populated areas and are in the middle of no where and see it significantly less.

Don't worry it will go back up for Christmas!
It seems to spike up on the Tuesday night before a long weekend here! No price fixing eh...

Wow ... I pay the equivalent of $2.20 for a mere litre of petrol and even more for diesel
!!!
If you store fuel over winter, don't you run risk of degradation and condensation of it ? How much do you pay for a good additive to prevent this ?

Re: Buy gas in the winter and use it in the summer?
they're getting ready to move us to winter blend gas, so it's supposed to help our prices.
Pulled from the WEB "Because RVP standards are higher during the winter, winter-grade fuel uses more butane, with its high RVP of 52 PSI, as an additive. Butane is inexpensive and plentiful, contributing to lower prices. Summer-grade fuel might still use butane, but in lower quantities -- around 2 percent of a blend"

When I think about my motorbike...
When it not in use for some months, and with the "old" gaz in the tank, I never had a problem to start and ride later.

Down here in SW Florida many people only come down for winter and leave thier boats on lift or storage up to 8 mo. at a time.
Certified Machanics us this product. GAS-SHOK, it Stabilizes Fuel,Adds Lubricants,Cleans tanks, enduces octane, reduces emissions, water seperation and stops phase seperation in ethanol fuels.
Cost $15 for 8 oz's but treats 80 gals.
This is the best product I have found and those with 4-6 month dry time would put this in fuel and run for 15 min. or more, best if put in both tanks and run on last trip on one tank so coats whole injectors or carbs.

I use stay-bil fuel stabilizer for the gas left over from this season. Make sure you ad it to the gas as soon as possible. I put it in too late two seasons ago, and I already had water in my gasoline. Needless to say that I had 10 gallons of useless gas now, that nobody wants to take. Even recycling places. What I found out through the internet though was, that I could still use it in my lawn mower, because it still has a carburator. Just had to mix some new gas in it. Long story short, I would say you should be fine buying gas now, as long as you add the stabilizer right away. I think it says it will condition the gas for 180 days or so.

Me and my hunting buddies regularly store 50 or so gallons of fuel up where we hunt for the entire year. Make sure the containers are full to the top, sealed tight, stored cool and out of the sun and preferably in a steel container (they make a 15 gallon mini drum that works great) and it should be fine even without stabilizer. Biggest problem is the goddam bears

On another note…everyone here runs a lot of high end sleds (snow machines) up here (20K +) and are almost all 2 strokes, running regular gas (not just about the low octane) contains 10-15% ethanol (I don't know if it's true for the States as it is in Canada) which can really damage 2 strokes. Just a fyi for those with 2S.

Re: Buy gas in the winter and use it in the summer?
i believe Sta-Bil advertises it's product to enable gas to last for a year. I've had that experience with gas stored for my house generator. I test and excercise my (carbuerated) generator monthly. Just used up the remaining gas and it lasted a year. I don't know how this would affect a fuel injected engine. I've also used up aged stored gas in my Honda Accord and GMC Savana. Of course it becomes diluted and that also could make it work.Christian wrote:I use stay-bil fuel stabilizer for the gas left over from this season. Could you just run the gas through a water separator and then put it into you car?
When you are done, the water sep can go on your boat..
At 4 bucks a gallon, that's worth recovering!

For return on 1 USd per gallon, factoring in storage containers, fuel stabilizer cost and liability and local regulations of storage?gas. So, is it viable to buy gas in the winter with an eye towards using it in the summer?
No.

As an aside. If you do have H20 n your gas try this: http://www.mrfunnel.com/Mr._Funnel/Home.html
Mr Funnel. Says it removes H20 as you pour gas through it.
