jib roller furling

I'm sure there's been lots of discussion on this sort of thing before, so point me to the thread if needed. I have an M25 that I'd like to put jib roller furling on. Currently the only jib on it is a 'working' jib (I guess; I don't really know; it's certainly not a genoa). I'd love to have a genoa on roller furling. Any guesses as to cost of system and having it installed? Also I currently use a gin pole to crank the mast up; the forestay hooks onto the pole and a line goes from the pole to the fore chainplate. Would having a roller furling system interfere with this in any way?

I can't give a definitive answer, as I don't own a 25, but my has roller furling, which works just fine with both the working jib, and the 150% genoa.

As to the gin pole, I (and most others with a live gin pole, from what I've read here) connect the jib or spinnaker halyard to the gin pole, which leaves the forestay free to connect to the stem fitting. I tie my furler drum to the end of the gin pole so it and the foil and sail all rotate together in a big triangle as the mast comes up. Overtightening the gin pole against the shrouds (backstay removed) allows me to pin the forestay by myself.

In fact, I use a 5-part reeving system (3 sheaves in the lower block, 2 in the upper), using large(ish) ball bearing sheaves, so I can work one-handed when needed. I also run the line through a rope clutch the PO added to the cabin roof for the main halyard, so I can raise it by hand without using a winch, and the clutch acts as a backstop so I couldn't lose the mast if I tried.

Hi Jeremy

A 150% genoa with foam luff, UV edge and reefing patches in a good dacron sailcloth is about $730 including shipping in the USA. A 135% would a few about $20 or so less expensive. Your choice would depend on your sailing conditions.

For furlers, your two best choices are the CDI FF2 for about $500 delivered in the USA, or a Schaefer Snapfurl CF-500 for about $570 including delivery in the USA.

You need a forestay with an open body turnbuckle (aka rigging screw) on the bottom to install a furler. The Schaefer accomdates a max wire dimension of 1/8". The CDI accomodates a max wire diameter of 5/16". You should have a toggle on the top of the forestay as well.

You can install either one of these two furlers by yourself; they are specifically designed for DIY.
