These sensors tend to be stuck pretty hard in the exhaust system - I would plan on getting the best tool you can for this job and apply torque c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y...

I understand the Ford Expedition and Chevy Suburban can both tow 10,000 lbs. :)

When looking at max tow ratings, be careful. These are usually for a specific truck and trailer configuration - like use of a load leveling hitch. If looking for a Mac tow vehicle, 5,000 lbs without a load leveling hitch is plenty sufficient (for all but Sumner's boat :) )

There are one or two load leveling hitches out there for use with surge brakes but really not needed for our lightweight boats.

Hey we are heavy, but I don't think that heavy  . I do need to weigh the whole works some time. I'm guessing between 3500 and 4000 for the boat/trailer ready to go. Now if we would of started with a X or M the 5000 might be a good guess 8) ,

No Seahouse, this is a Mac forum and I meant his Mac. I have never seen a more heavily modified boat - mods usually add weight. Thanks for making sure I state things without any ambiguity.

Robert,
Sumner has a Mac.S that is a lot lighter than our Mac.XorM. I have a MacX and probably have much more added weight than Sumners add ons and I weigh in at 4500 lbs fully loaded for a week trip with tandem axel trailer.
I tow this with a 1999 F150 extended cab with a 6cylinder 4.2 liter standard trans rated at tow 2000 lbs for past 4 years.

I wonder what Sumner's boat weights when fully loaded - if I remember, probably does not add water and stores until after launch.

I generally tow fully loaded, for a max 1 week outing for two. While I do not have the water storage (carry agout 15 gallons max), I do fill up with 30 gallons of gas at home.

He only has around a 10 hp outboard, no steering consel and all gear/harnesses that controls 50hp 255 lb outboard engine. Its just a rudder and tiller and probably tiller pilot .
Empty of extras his boat weighs in at around 2250 lbs w/trailer. Add all the stuff he added I would guess around 3500lbs for a fully equiped week cruise.
I guess Sumner is cking this post and saying, got to weigh in. :D

When we towed to Florida (2200 miles)...

Image

... we had the 19 gallon gas tank filled as I could still get ethanol free gas here then and didn't know if I could find it down there (always did). We also had over 40 gallons of water onboard as we like our mountain water here at home.

Of course we did add a lot of ....

Image

...food and beverages before starting on the trip and had enough food, water and fuel onboard for over a month and the Double Doodie bags let us go 7+ weeks without having to dump a portapottie at any time.

When I bottom painted the boat (barrier and antifouling).....

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner ... de-39.html

.... I moved the water line up 1 inch and you can see that at the beginning of the trip we were in....

Image

...to the top of it. Having the water in separate 4 and 7 gallon containers helped to trim the boat out during the trip. Also with the added weight the boat felt much more solid in heavier water and more comfortable. Once it is moving I don't think the weight effects the speed that much and Ruth and I would never know if it did. Your are not continually tacking like on mountain lakes in the west.

If I ever weigh boat/trailer I'll post,

Sum

FWIW I had my V23 weighed just before launch last spring. She was rigged for day sailing, not cruising. No water, only 3 gallons of fuel, 6hp long shaft outboard. With trailer, she came in at just under 3500 lb. The original sales brochure says the boat weighs 2000 lb. That must have been without the mast, keel, or even bulkheads! I know the original single axle trailer does not weigh 1500 lb.

Are there any diesel SUV's out there that cost less than the $62k and up Mercedes? It looks like Jeep Grand Cherokee will have a diesel soon, but I don't see any others.

In 2007 the Jeep Grand Cherokee was available with Benz 3.0 liter diesel. Might be able to find one.
