in the cockpit area I have two water inlet valves, one on either side, they go in behind the companionway area but do not hook to anything. am I supposed to have water storage tanks on either side? Am I missing something?

Sounds like something the PO did.
Got any photos?

My 1984 Mac 22 has no water inlets whatsoever. It does have a moveable iron keel.
