Re: Blood Stain Remover

Post by JoeG »

I was out with a friend and the "Admiral-in-law" and some how I got a pin prick on my finger. I was unaware of it until I noticed my red flecked spinnaker sheet had some extra red on it. While the spinnaker was up she "requested" an immediate return to shore. As I was dousing the chute my bandage came off. Couldn't do much to contain the blood while up on the fore deck.
BTW My Chute Scoop is out on the FedEx truck for delivery today.

I don't have any sage advice on blood removal, but I have to note that this post sounds suspiciously like an alibi is being prepared. Has the "admiral-in-law" gone missing by any chance? :D

Combine 1 cup of ammonia and 1/2 half gallon of water and soak in it overnight. Follow up, if needed, by scrubing it with a soft brush, using a pasty, thick solution of dry laundry detergent and warm water. Let that sit on the stain for about 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Indeed I do remember it... Great film.

Personally, I like to think of such services as "calling in The Cleaners". ;)

Actually, I have a wealth of experience in cleaning up blood. I'll leave you all wondering as to why however.

It will suffice to say that yes, I am, indeed, good to have around in an 'emergency'. :)

A friend will help you move.

A true friend will help you move a body.

Kevin sounds more like the a true friend.

:) Just did a google on Gumption to find out what the ingredients are as there is non on the container and found this http://www.essentialbaby.com.au/forums/ ... 10099.html , good for a laugh, apparently they don't need to put the ingredients there because it is non toxic but can guarantee it takes of hard to remove stains like magic.

Hydrogen peroxide works wonders. Use spray bottle to apply and then wash with laundry detergent. Worked wonders on our cloth materials after surgery cases.

Yep, works great for clothes and such!

My only caution would be to be a little cautious of using such a strong oxidizer on delicate sails. For me, this would be one of the latter things I'd try when all else fails.

I asked Challenge Sailcloth Tech support - they don't recommend bleach or ammonia on nylon. It'll ruin it. To generalize, from the perspective of chemistry, that rules out using both acids/oxdizers and strong bases. That would rule out peroxide too. I've heard horror stories about soaking spinnakers in a swimming pool and having the sail weakened to the point of destruction.

They recommend gentle soaps and gentle scrubbing, followed by rinsing. For deep cleaning they recommend CS-530 Sail Cleaner, which they sell to sailmakers in $200 barrels weighing 40 pounds or more.

I asked them about using meat tenderizer (enzymes) and they didn't have an answer.
