Rudder rope?

Post by dlandersson »

I want to replace the rudder ropes (rudders two btw) on my :macx: before launching it. Looks like 1/4" or 3/8"? How long should a :macx: rudder rope be? :?

Use 3/8 bungee cord, 12ft for each rudder. It works much
better than rope.

I replaced the rudder lines on my M, but I don't remember the length. You could tape a smaller diameter line to the existing rudder line and pull out the old line and measure it, then the thin line could be used to pull new line through the rudder hole.
Good luck.

I just picked up 3/8 bungee cord from my local Ag supply. They sell it
for secureing tarps. Works good I don't have a Link for it.

Why is bungee chord a better option than rope for the rudders?

Thx

Lets the rudder kick up if you hit ground the rudder will be held to the tension of the bungee hopefully saving your rudder.

That's an interesting idea. Mine has two separate lines to each rudder, and I certainly could use a bungee for the hold-down line, maybe with a loop at the right length to tension the bungee to hold the rudder down and a stopper knot for when it's released.

Or spliced (some how) end to end with the 'raise' line, so it's just one loop. I don't know how I'd splice bungee to braid, though. :?

I like the idea. But, how far does it stretch when you pull up a water filled rudder? Depending on how tight you have the rudders shimmed, they can get pretty heavy. I assume you just route it the same as Mac sets it up using stopper knots at the rudders. Any pic's?

search on rudder kick-up mod. we've been doing this one for years.you only use bungee on the pull down=hold down side, the lift up rope stays normal.

West Marinw asmteel or equal dynaneen rope for both center board and rudders. Snap lock cleats for the rudders are great; they POP when rudder hits ground, releasing/saving the rudder and giving an audible shallow water alert.

I used 5/16" and added a pair of blocks to make it a lot easier to raise them.
