Teleflex SS137 10
What is the best reasonably priced steering mechanism out there at the moment for a Mac?
Older posts talk about
Teleflex SS-141 10
That it fits and that it seems best to use a 10ft cable instead of the 9 or 8 original.
Teleflex SS137 10
Seems to be popular with dealers at the moment because it is easy to install. Does it fit on a Mac? Does it work on a Mac? The description on the package says for boats up to 24 ft.
MIne is a 1999 Mac X. 50 HP Yamaha. What length cable is best for that?

Re: Teleflex SS137 10
I just installed new steering last weekend(and a few evenings previous).
I have a 96 with the steering exiting the hull at the transom by the starboard rudder. I modified it to come out like yours(98 and newer) at the front of the boomerang.
I bought a uflex rototech steering kit with cable, helm unit, and new bezel. It was fairly straight forward. The cable length seems inconsequential on iBoats.com

iboats wanted $157for the kit with 9'cable. BWY was $189 with 8' and my local marina parts department was $173. I bought it local and had it in less than 24hrs, no shipping, no border crossing, no hassle.
The 9' has lots of cable no tight bends at all. To sweep a 10' through there it might stick out past the bump up in the liner. The liner is pretty much flat from pedestal to steering exit in motor well but it turns upward near the starboard hull. I'm sure 10' will work, but I wasn't wishing I'd gone that route.
All I have left to do is seal a couple holes.
Look up the rototech on BWY or goole. I has a planetary gear system so the steering wheel is centered in the helm unit. My old one was offset to the bottom so the helm unit took up more room in the top of the pedestal. Now I have more clearance to the cables for my helm mounted sounder. I believe your pedestal is taller than mine as well. The planetary gear system is supposedly "better" even than rack and pinion.
Since I've just replaced a supposedly lousy helm/steering system that lasted 17years, I'm sure my new one will serve me well.
Just one opinion/experience

Whipsyjac,
I have a 1997 MacX. I plan on using original outlet hole aft. Will the 9ft. cable still be long enough?

Re: Teleflex SS137 10
Since we are on the steering subject, where can I find a "black center cap" for the stock steering wheel? BWY only has caps for the 26M. Any ideas?
I have a 1998 26X, mine I believe is a 10' cable which is a little long in the Aft berth. Do you think 9' would work for mine?

Re: Teleflex SS137 10
DaveB,
If you have the early style steering which exits the hull near the starboard rudder I'm pretty sure you need the 12footer. The good news is the price doesn't seem to vary much or at all with cable length (at least not from 8-12ft). Mine was routed all the way to the starboard hull then back through the "lazarette" corner via a conduit of sorts to exit near the transom. About 10inches or so protrudes and mounts in the stainless tube the steering nut bolts on.
When I modded mine I cut 8inches or so off the arm on the stainless tube so the nut is very close to the hole in the hull. I would say there is almost a foot more cable to reach the starboard hull, almost a foot further aft, and almost a foot sticking out of the hull which combined makes 3 more feet than the 9ft I just installed.
I'm almost done cleaning up my install, I'll take some pics this week and wrap up my thread. Special thanks in all this to BWY. The descriptions in their parts section of which steering fits which year and application and why really helped my decision. I ordered and received their custom steering kit and I am thrilled with it.
Vulcan,
BWY sells steering with 8ft cables for
boats with the steering exiting the hull forward near the front of the boomerang. I ordered 9ft because I didn't want a tight squeeze or tight curves in my cable. I had thought to go 10ft and I'm glad I didn't as it would either require more pad-eyes to hold it down or be flopping around back there(where I end up sleeping usually).

Not sure if its ok to put that site on here, or if they are still operating but that's about the only website I've seen the wheel centers.
I'm sure there are members who know better than I about that.

No Dave you need the 12' cable I did this repair just last year and I have the 96 X. They are cool enough to show all the specs on bwyachts.com if you want to check and make sure.DaveB wrote:Whipsyjac,

Thanks Vulcan &Ormond,
I cked the Boatstore USA and they have the Rotech/ Uflex 12ft. unit for $119 including the steering wheel that I don't need.
They also have the Teliflex 137 and the 141 for same price. I know many here have used both systems.

Re: Teleflex SS137 10
Thanks Whipsyjac, for the info. Kelly Hanson website is up but I will call and see if they are in business first. Sounds like the 9' cable should work.
Mine is original and I would feel better off the coast with a new one.
Thanks again everyone!!

Here are pics of my install showing the 9' cable...why 10' would probably be too much... and my steering linkage;

Great looking rear berth, Whipsyjac. My wiring back there needs some organizing. Mine came with a 10' steering cable and is hanging down too much. Hope the 9' fix better.

Re: Teleflex SS137 10
I installed successfully on my 1999X the
Uflex Rotech Rotary Boat Steering System with 9ft cable
(from boatstoreusa for $129)
Yes 10ft would have been too long.
as recomended by willy
Thanks Willy
