THANK YOU FOR THAT POST! It explains EVERYTHING! Saw the picture of the mast "pinned" I notice he flattened the mast plate to do it - I might consider doing that because I have no vang - I need to think about it.

Actually there is an attachment point for the vang in the mast slot. It's hard to tell in the pics, but it's where the lanyard for the pin is anchored to. I have never used the vang though. I don't see how the extra time rigging it is worth the marginal benefit.

Thanks for all the replies! Securing the boom end of the vang to the beam stanchion worked great. All the replies regarding stiff rotation of the mast make me a bit nervous, as mine moves with barely a touch. Maybe my shrouds are too loose?

Okay, I got the brass 1400 pound ones for the baby stays, but which one should I use for the mainsheet?

The load rating on the mainsheet is not that high--1400 should be fine. Mike Inmon put the stamped pin type on my mainsheet which bent immediately but didn't break. I replaced them with 2500lb. wichard screw pin shackles from WM.

If you can "twang" the shrouds, they're more than tight enough. They shouldn't be "loose" but they needn't be guitar string tight either. If you have a loos gauge, they should be around 300 lbs.
