Hi,
I know the window replacement has been discussed before but I cannot find any conclusive posts regarding the replacement of windows. So i would like to start one in regards to actual window replacement success stories.
I am in the process of taking mine out and looking to replace, so
1. any advice on removal of residual silicone
2. BWY suggests using black silicone to redo the windows, but seeing as this is how they were done before and leaked is this really the best way
3. Has anyone successfully done the windows with this 3M 4991 tape and if so how are the results and how did you do it.
4. If you used the tape what did you use to set the rest and fill the gaps.
5. Any other information you might find useful or input
If you have replaced the windows with success, I would like to hear how you did it and what you used.
Thanks
Whitefalcon

A couple of good window replacement threads, including one where I described my method and success:

I also posted the procedure as a 'mod' for those needing advice.

Re: Window Replacement Successes
So I managed to finish my window replacement and with great success. I ended up using Dow Corning 795 as the silicone and it worked great, i really enjoy the working time it has and managed to get it cleaned up real nice. I taped EVERYTHING inside and out and am glad that i did.
I used abrasive scrubby's to remove any remaining silicone and left a thick flattened bead around the flange for the window. While i had the windows out I buffed and polished the surrounding black stripes to look almost brand new.
All in all I am very happy with the outcome, I will take some photos and upload them for all to see. Please contact me if you are thinking about re-doing your windows and i have give you a step by step.

Re: Window Replacement Successes
Well I see people have been fretting over replacing windows on these MacGregor boats for years... Is there any definitive answer as to what is the correct way and what are the correct tools and what is the correct material to use to get this done? It doesn't seem like it would be rocket science but I have tried to do windows on campers and RVs before and they turned into complete disasters. so I'm hoping the boat is not going to be the same case however I can't even determine what type of material to use in place of these windows. Is it lexan, lucite... What?

Re: Window Replacement Successes
I have replaced the windows and I got mine directly from Blue Water Yachts. They fit nicely.
My description of how to change the windows is located in the MODS section, here:
