Re: peak sail
I was going to order my new sails from them but starting reading some bad things about them on other forums, like items not being delivered, poor quality and fit. It seems they are only a reseller for a Chinese loft so take that as you may.
See below for what eventually put me off.

I ended up ordering from a local loft. Price was not that much more than peak and service was exemplary.
My advise would be to shop around.

Re: peak sail
Hey Kadet, I recently replaced my jib with a new one custom made by Evolution sails on the Gold Coast, it fitted perfectly and I highly recommend them, price was cheaper than importing.
Cheers, Dennis.

Re: peak sail
I have had a poor experience with them as did a sailing buddy. Another actually received his head sail (many months late) and in two months of use it faded quite badly and looks horrible to this day.
Lots of stuff in the achieves, buyer beware!

Re: peak sail
Yes a lot of the internet blurb is not relevant. I bought a 110% jib in heavier material. No issues. Price was good and delivery to Aus good. (before the AUD dropped of course). Quality seemed good for the season I used it (M26 now sold) but cannot provide a longer term view.

Re: peak sail
Make sure you confirm the size. I bought a furling jib and genoa from Peak Sails, in the ordering process I questioned the sizes, I wanted to check against my existing hanked on sails. From memory the Macgregor suppliers corner online downloads had similar sizes for these sails.
I was assured they knew the sizes and that they'd fit. I was told "you cannot compare the measurements of these sails against ones with hanks. Furling headsails require a reduction in luff in order to accommodate the base and swivel of the CDI furling system. We build over 500 headsails a year for the MacGregor 26X and M. We guaranty they will fit out of the bag." They would not confirm the dimensions.
Quality of sails were OK, and they arrived in decent time, given they went from Asian loft -> States -> Australia.
Unfortunately, they were dimensionally about 20% too small. They do not respond to emails.
I'd parrot the buyer beware remark above......

I am sorry to say the posts I read in the sailnet forum were from 2013 about poor service slow delivery and quality issues. Might be a new company butaviro wrote:hi

Re: peak sail
There is a Doyle sail-loft right next door to Minney's Boat Parts in Costa Mesa near the MacGregor plant and I had work done to my mainsail there and they were GREAT. The guys that work there are out early in the mornings racing but in the late morning and afternoon they work on sails for people and they are really good. They have made a lot of sails for Roger. One of the guys who works there lives in San Clemente and when they were done with my sail he drove to my house and delivered the sail in person! He said he likes to see the boats his work is going to be sailed on and since I was close he drove right over. I took him around the house to the side yard to the boat and I was working on the Genoa furler the day before so I still had the mast up. The guy from Doyle wanted to put up the main! I said, sure!. He ran the main up and checked my rigging and then he folded the main back up like a pro. They were really the best service ever. He was at my house for like an hour giving me tips and instructions about caring for my sails and showing me how to use them. He said if anything ever goes wrong with the sail just drop it off any time 24 hours a day in the big night drop slot next to Minneys and he said they will take care of it. When I was there they put my sail on this big huge white shiny table (the table was the size of a soccer field!). It looked like they had a ton of sails for J boats hanging up in the rafters. I bet those were their personal sails.
I think the key is to buy from folks that will take care of you - because that way whatever does go wrong you know someone is there to take care of it.

Re: peak sail
Recently they have been caught red-handed selling cheap sailcoth branded as name brand stuff. Their prices are "too good to be true'. They're selling sails for less than it costs honest sailmakers to build them. Caveat Emptor. Ask Challenge.com to send you a swatch of the real cloth and compare under high resolution.
Peak Sails sold a suit of tri-radial sails to a Catalina 22 owner over on Sailboatowners.com. They charged the buyer for Challenge Warp Drive and but made the sails out of ordinary dacron used for crosscut sails. The buyer got a sample of Warp Drive cloth from Challenge and compared it to his "Warp Drive" Sails from Peak. The cloth is NOT Warp Drive.
The sails are going to stretch out beyond belief the first time a strong gust hits it. I hope the buyer used a credit card so he can dispute the charges.

| I don't normally allow anyone to knock a supplier since we're not here to kill anyone's business and we're supposed to be a fair and balanced forum. So... please just report on your own personal experiences with the vendor, good or bad, and just report the facts, not your interpretation or here-say from someone else. Report what you've seen with your own eyes and your own business interactions. That being said, I would encourage anyone who wishes to buy anything to thoroughly check out the vendor via their Better Business Bureau record, of not only their current business, but also any other businesses that the owner has owned and operated in the past, as past is often prologue with regard to business owners. Also, check this and other forums and see what other customers have said about the reliability of the vendor and the quality of the products offered. If there's smoke, there's likely fire... so if some folks say they did well with the vendor but a significant number of others report very serious problems.... well, I'll just say a very strongly worded "buyer beware". |
