Need some help
This forum has been a wonderful resource for me and a dear friend of mine. I'm hoping that someone can help out with a situation that has come up.
One of my best friends bought a 1972 MacGregor Venture 22' last July, about the same time that I bought a 1986 MacGregor 25'. We had plans of sailing around the Potomac River and down to the Chesapeake together with our wives. Unfortunately my friend had been diagnosed with colon cancer a few years prior. However, he fought and won! Even more unfortunately my friend had a remission last August right after he and his wife had finished refitting their boat. Sadly he passed away last week at the young age of 31 leaving behind his wife and two young children. My friend had served in the Coast Guard and was a firefighter here in Northern Virginia qualified in swift water rescue. He was an amazing man.
Anyway, back to the boat. He and his wife completely refit it. They spent hours restoring it, they had cockpit cushions made and bought a used outboard and were able to sail it a few times before the end of the season and the return of his cancer last Fall. Now, with his passing, his wife has decided to sell the boat. She isn't looking to make any money. They've actually got about 2-3 times more invested in this pretty trailer sailor than she is asking for it. The boat is located in Stafford County, not too far from Quantico Marine Corps Base. The boat comes with a trailer, which it is currently on. I don't have the details on the outboard right now. I know he bought it used, pretty sure it's a 9.9, but it might be less. I know he had the pull cord on the starter replaced by his marina - because it broke on his first trip! LOL
I've attached a link to an album that I've made on facebook that shows the before and after photos of the boat. If anyone is interested in buying it, please send me a PM and I can answer any questions that you may have. I am just trying to help the family out. They're asking $1,200 and they're negotiable.

Re: Need some help
Sad to hear of his passing. Way too young. And as a nation we are indebted for his service.
The boat is dirt cheap and I'd buy it in an instant if I lived closer. Has she tried listing it on Craigs list.

Re: Need some help
I'm on my second round of cancer, so I understand what the family is going through.
I can not help with the sale of the boat, but I can come up with a few dollars to donate to the family if it will help.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. Yes, he was way too young. Condolences to his family. We appreciate his duty and commitment to serving others.

For that much money I would keep it for when the kids were old enough to use it. That would be quite the keep sake for them. Especially something their father was so passionate about.

Thank you all for the kind words. JohnCT - you're in my thoughts. I hope you continue winning the battles!
I'm posting the boat on CL today. I was just giving the folks here a shot first.
His daughter is 9 and his son is 5 so it's going to be awhile before they are off single handing!

Good luck with sale.
