Keel removal and reinstall on 85, Mac 25

Post by Ryan »

Can anyone out there direct me to some info(idealy a video) on the process of removing the keel of a 85 Mac 25 and reinstalling it? I have been searching for the info but havent found any that really shows it well or complete. I need advice on safely jacking the boat up( its on the trailer) and any and all other info possible. Thanks so much guys! Ryan.

Ryan, I'm looking at the same issue on my '85. The conclusion I came to is that the only option I'm comfortable with is to tow it to a boatyard and have them put it on jackstands there with a travel lift. It will be a few hundred bucks, but it's a lot less than an unfortunate accident would cost under my healthcare plan! I understand that depending on where you live that may or may not be viable. If you live farther away from the nearest lift/crane another option might be to borrow a high trailer for a fixed-keel boat and temporarily transfer the boat to that so you can take it home to work on.

I'll let the pros who have done it before describe other ways to jack up the boat (it goes without saying to always be careful!).

Here's one way, http://www.macgregorsailors.com/forum/v ... it=+spring

Several of the guys have removed the boat from the trailer on land. Just search a bit.

Just takes a bit of time. Gaz found this interesting lift which might give you an idea or two also.

That's the easy part... Can't tell you about the rest - got a different boat. Good luck.
