Baby stays

Post by Dutch01527 »

I lost one of my 2000 :macx: baby stays overboard in a moment of carelessness.

Does anyone know if replacements can be purchased? I have tried BWY web site but an not find them listed.

I used a line tied on to drop the mast which worked ok but would like to find a proper replacement if possible.

You first have to get one of these:

which you can get from BlueWater Yachts, and depending on whether this:

is missing, one of them as well. Then take the other babystay, with attached stay adjuster to a rigger and ask them to make up a copy of the one you have. If you're in the U.K. there have to be riggers somewhere nearby. If you for some reason can't find a rigger, phone or email BlueWater and order the complete set, babystay and adjuster(s), from them. I'm sure they''ll make one up for you. N.B., you'll need the short pins and ringdings (which attach the stay adjusters to each other) as well.

That said, I wd be very surprised if there isn't a source of MacGregor parts in the U.K.... but then - I'm easily surprised...

Thanks Max

Mine is a bit different. The mast end has a stainless lug shaped like a phone ear piece that slots into a hole in the mast. At the other it has a near 90 degree angle bracket that slips under the deck fitting and is joined to the stay via a Clevis pin and two pronged stainless adjuster ( like the picture but two prongs and smaller).

I had another idea. If I was to pass a stainless eye/ring bolt though the baby stay holes in the mast with a eye/ring nut on the other end, left in place permanently. I could then use a Dyneema line down to the deck fitting to form the baby stays. Maybe easier than getting a replacement. Any flaws in that approach?

I think that the MacGregor parts suppliers in the UK have given up. Not a big enough market.

I Agree with Ray - sounds quite different from my set-up. Whatever you do, you should make the material for the babystay the same for both, or you'll have real difficulty comparing tensions between them. Tensions should be very similar, if not the same.

Haven't seen one like that, and unfortunately can't find one like it in the BlueWater online catalog: http://bwyachts.com/BWYParts/PartsList.htm.
(I can't get that page to work with Chrome, but loads with FireFox). Only thing I can suggest is contact them directly - last resort is to have a rigger make a copy - bespoke - cd be expensive.

I think that I might add the eye bolt and nut to the mast and splice Dyneema baby stays .Easy and cheap to do and probably just as efficient.

Makes sense - as Indiana Jones says,

I could not find similar replacement baby stay so I ended up doing the following:
- insert a eye bolt and eye nut in the mast at the position of the old baby stay hole. Nut held in place with Locktite.
- constructed a 2x Dyneema replacement stays. Each with a snap shackle on one end ( for the mast eye) and a long loop at the other end ( to loop under the deck fitting).

Works great. In fact probably better than the origional because it is easier to store, can not kink and is fully secure at both ends.

I think that Dyneema line has some real advantages on a trailer sailer as a replacement for wire. I have also replaced my adjustable back stay with it.

Can someone please post pictures of the baby stays in use? The MRS pole came with my boat but no other rigging. I am trying to construct baby stays and would like to see the attachment points both to the deck and to the mast.
