Ignition switch

Post by caboswart »

Hello, I recently purchased a 26x with a 50 h.p. Yamaha. I picked it up in Ventura and dragged it all the way to Loreto. After getting it here I realized that I have no idea where the ignition/starter switch is? The lanyard kill switch is under the throttle control.
Any help will be much appreciated.
I can email photos of the pedestal if that will help.
Thanks

Typically, it should be right where the lanyard with the kill-switch bracket goes: the bracket surrounds a bump with the hole where the key goes.
At least, this is the case with the engines I know...

Strange, it is not there and no keys came with the boat?

If you do need to install an ignition key, make sure it is not on the side of the pedestal. I have bent two keys trying to slide past. Switching to a different helm wheel help to solve the problem, but I was pretty worried when it happened!

I'm astonished you appear to have bought it without testing the engine, seeing as how it could be easily half the cost of the boat to replace if it's shot. But that said, just snap a few photos of the throttle assembly from different angles, and then use Photobucket or Tinypic (not even registration is required), and get those pics up on this forum. I believe you can do three photos per posting. In the meantime, sure, go ahead and email me some photos. I've just shot you an email through this forum with my address.

Just FYI, our man caboswart tells me via email that he's found his ignition, right where it ought to be, so we can call off the hounds.

But did he get the motor to run? As you stated, that's a biggie. Even with a good buy.

I dunno if he's tested it yet, but having mentioned that it's a Yammie, he may find this video helpful...maybe even inspirational. Otherwise, there are lots of good YouTube videos that'll show one how to test and perform basic outboard maintenance.
