Record water levels in Great Lakes area

Our water levels are up by about 2 feet. Half the marinas on L. Ontario are shut down due to flooding.


Just one more thing that makes Macs a superior boat: Macs are immune to high seasonal water levels because of their high freeboard.

Sorry - I get you, but forgot to reply. My FIL was joking about the same thing just a few days ago. And I get him. Most of the time.

I'm launching the boat this morning, once I finish my coffee. The lake is even higher than the last time I saw it. I'll post a couple more pics later.

I stopped at SouthPoint yesterday looking for a mast. Didn't see one. Lots of cruisers are launched though. With your sails up, you can now beat most of them to the lake - 5 mph speed limit on the bay for power boats until the water goes down. No speed limit for sail boats.

I checked the conditions at my marina. I'm hoping the lake starts to recede soon. This is my dock and part of the parking lot.

Saw this today when I launched the boat . . .



Half the hinged ramp is under water, and they've added wooden walkways where the gate is 'cause it's under water. But at least the docks are floating, so it's all good as far as using the marina goes.

The chicken wire baskets of stone along the shore are now under water, and the speed limit sign has no speed limit because the numbers are under water, too.

And I thought the water was high back then.

At least the boat is now in for the season. Again, the only sailboat in the place (behind the pontoon under the big green tarp).

No, it's the bottom of Lake Ontario. Literally. The south end of Irondequoit Bay is the furthest point south of the Lake.

Well the boat is finally in the water...

The high water levels on the St. Lawrence river make this the only way to launch this year. Marina staff tell me that the levels are going to stay ridiculously high into mid August as authorities try to lower the water level in lake Ontario.

Getting the boat back onto the trailer for summer week-trips is going to be hard. I'm going to have to lower the mast to get through the locks onto the Ottawa river and then haul out at a ramp 20 miles away that doesn't have a floating dock. Fun times.

Indeed. I hear on the news that, to lower the level in the GL by increasing the flow downstream may actually increase the current so much as to bring all shipping traffic in the St. Lawrence to a stop.
