New sails for my X

Post by Free2sail »

Hi Guys,

Has been a long time since I posted - missed you fam! Well to refresh you memory, I asked you guys about a 1996 :macx: . It was about 10 years ago, maybe more, but I was offered it for $3000. I bought it and she sat. I am now at the place where I want to get her in basic shape to go sail this coming spring summer. I am in Northern CA, and would love to meet up with others in this area. Anyways, I really need new sails for the boat. Could probably get by with just a jib, but a new main would be pretty cool.

So I looked at BWY, and Peak, and Precision Sails, and with the 20% discount Precision is offering right now, they are all pretty close.. I'm in the bay area so lots of lofts here, but kinda leaning towards Precision. If I give them my order by the end of this week, they will give me a 20% discount. Order now, get sails in spring, they are willing to split up payment.

First, I am hoping for some input from you guys on sail maker - i.e. would Precision by a mistake, or are there other places I should check out, other than the above.

Second, what recommendations on the add-ons do you find helpful, i.e 2 or 3 reef points ( I will be sailing on San Fran Bay- 20 knots on a normal day), and should I be thinking partial battons, full battons, a mix of battens, and I was thinking the 115% jib, because of my area. Thoughts.

I am also thinking the Precision 400 level of sails.

Here is the link to the quote:

Let me know if the link doesn't work - seems to work for me.

Wishing you guys fair winds . . .
Chuck

I'd check with JudyB at Hyde Sails.

I replaced my '98 mainsail about a year ago using the good folks at Doyle Sails here in Florida. I can't say I have every bought sails form anyone else, so I can't make any comparisons. I just know I have always been treated very well at Doyle. I think the real task is to pick with whom you most want to do business and stick with them, and, over time, build a good relationship. I have three sail boats so I have reoccuring needs for a good general sail loft. I have been happy with a 110% jib for over ten years because our summer storms come up fast, and I really don't need to be swinging a huge Genoa out there. Roller reefing is a must for me with any size jib, along with a Sunbrella strip on the leech and foot. I went with one set of reef points but considered two very seriously. But, at 74 years young, I mostly don't head out in the really rough stuff much anymore, so I stayed with the one set. I would imagine you would do better with two so you can really trim that puppy down for a more comfortable sail in your usual 20 knot winds. I stayed with partial battens, as well. I am no longer a racer; my main sailing lake is 5 miles in diameter, and I am no real hurry to get to the other side. I am just going to tack and head back to the side I came from! :D My point is that choices depend on your sailing preferences. I imagine a good basic sail is going to serve you pretty well. Good luck. :macx:

I have purchased a main and a 150 genoa from BWY and am very happy with them. Also heard great things about Judy B, and even though I did not purchase from her, she provided advice on my purchase.
