Re: MacGregor 65
I could probably afford the boat, but the slip would kill me.

Re: MacGregor 65
I would need a bigger garage.
Does it come with a mast raising rig? No matter, the Admiral won't let me spend that on a boat. Still saving for two more weddings. I'm happy with my 26M anyway.

Re: MacGregor 65
If I was gonna do liveaboard I would grab it.
Those things are fast and take rough seas better than any sailboat around. They cut through the waves like a submarine. There are lots of documents passages for these doing two week passages averaging over 22 knots ! That's 528 nautical miles PER DAY!!
These suckers will get you where your going in a really short time and they do it in exceptional comfort because they do not heave or toss in big seas.
If you sit on an anchor most the time throwing parties and like fine furniture a catamaran or a Benneteau is better but if you spend most you time SAILING these things are the bomb.

Re: MacGregor 65
BOAT, I believe all what you say and it sounds logicall. But why these boats are not standard in circumnavigations? Save, fast, comfort, cheap...

Re: MacGregor 65
Maybe it does come with a trailer.
https://www.popyachts.com/pilothosue-sa ... ina-207699Located in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, this 65-foot used MacGregor 65 is a great pilothosue sailboat. Macgregor boats are affordable designed sailing vessels that are built to allow easy towing on a trailer.

Re: MacGregor 65
I had posted this previously on a Mac 65, but when MacGregor announced that they were stopping production of the Mac 65 I was contacted by a customer that said if I could get him one he would also buy a Mac 26 for his son. I contacted the MacGregor factory but was told that the last ones to be built were already sold.

Re: MacGregor 65
Hey kurz - the skipper that documented 500 mile days was racing the boat. I think for most uses you can guarantee about 250+ nautical miles per day from this boat.
The average for the 65 is about 10 knots every 1000 miles which makes it one of the fastest cruising boats ever built.
Also – this is not a boat your going to see north of the Canadian border with the US. Those sailing grounds require a different kind of animal. These are not for the Labrador or Norwegian Sea.
There are not very many of the pilot house boats – that’s the one I am talking about. That one is the strong one. The boat is light. It’s not suited for the North Sea or icy conditions because it’s not insulated. You need a heavy boat with lots of insulation in northern storm force winds. These boats sail Bermuda and the Azores and all over the Pacific. When a guy in Oceanside CA (me) says this is a boat to get you where you want to go very fast I’m talking about the places that a person from Oceanside CA would go. Mexico, Hawaii, New Zealand, Panama, The Caribbean, Puerto Rico. These are all well documented passages for the 65 model built after 1987 (the pilothouse) which was a much stronger boat than the first ones. The pilothouse added a lot more strength to the deck like the second raccoon stripe did to the deck of the 26M. And the engine was moved with a better shaft and they added a transom extension. The pilothouse boat can be steered from inside and makes long passages very comfortable.
