Great discussion, I've had my gate lock come loose fall off and land on deck. So next time I used pliers on the thumb but, to make it tighter but it doesn't tighten, the mast sail slot just opens out. I Love the idea of a Stainless steel Pin, and will do that mod shortly. As we often end up in 20kts wind. There is one way I know of Not to Loose the pin.
That is get some Stainless Steel Nylon coated fishing leader wire, with correct size Crimpers. I would use thinest wire (which is also cheapest) as it's only going to hold your Gate Lock Pin, not a grouper. Then make a Loop with wire at one end looping it through Pin ( buy a pin with a ring on it) and Crimp loop in place. This loop should be small so looks good. Say 15 mm or less.
Then loop wire around mast leaving enough length to be able to work with pin easily, make the second loop in wire around the mast, pull loop fairly snug to mast, crimp wire to make a fixed loop around mast and cut off excess wire at crimp. :macx:

I have the Shapeways mast gate for the flared style mast (see Jimmy Alonso's image). The concept is ok but requires hammering or peening the gate flange to fit in the slot. Otherwise the mast gate insert slot is too wide and the sail slide pops out when I lower and flake the main. Ideally I would prefer to keep all the slides in the slot when lowered and flaked prior to adding the sail cover. A small opening to the side of the slot would permit inserting the slides. Once all the slide are in the slot the opening is covered to complete the slot. Obviously this would not work for bolt rope mains.

In the photo above with the 2004 mast, I noticed, that there are 4 pop rivets showing.
Mine is a 2007, with only 2 on each side.
Was this a modification to the mast... or what was in 2004?
The gooseneck got loosened from accidental jibes so I added 2 more rivets and actually have a bolt going thru side to side now.

Mast Track Gate Cover BWY

Post by Jim B Mack »

I read somewhere that the "BWY Mast Track Gate Cover" could work for an older 26M before 2007.
By pounding the spread shut, Well I can't find that write up anywhere. I thought it was somewhere on the BWY site.
Maybe I read it here but can't find the post........

http://shop.bwyachts.com/product-p/3454-1m3.htm

Besides new gas tanks, I really want a lines led aft kit which is useless if the slugs fall out. So I'm thinking the mast track and some pounding and peening could work.

Now for my question has anybody pounded the spread closed and used a track cover from BWY.

BWY sometimes answers questions like these or used to.

Looking for input, always a challenge now these boats are getting a little older and out of production.

Sumner fabricated a gate that worked with the spread opening.

I just got my BWY spread mast.. mast gate thing..
Simple but nice.. enough..
I like the one that a member built better.. when I can get into the machine shop at work.. will consider making one.
It looked like a great idea!
