I am the proud new owner of a Venture of Newport 23, I got it off craigslist for $300 and I'm working on restoring the boat. The previous owner didn't know much about sailing and as a result got rid of the bowsprit. My plan to rebuild the bowsprit but I don't know the dimensions of the original and I can't find anything about that on the internet. If you have a Venture of Newport could you measure the bowsprit and take a few pictures for me? Any other first time advice would also be appreciated.
Thank you so much!
I've wondered about sailing my VN23 as a sloop, a single jib on the stay for the yankee sail. Lots of controversy and opinions of two foresail cutter versus one foresail sloop. It seems theoretically okay to me but it's just a thought. I'm not going to because I'd have to buy a sloop-size jib sail, but since you don't have a bowsprit you might try it. Do you have the cutter sails?
Do you have the hardware for the bowsprit?

Bud, thanks for your suggestion. I thought about sailing it as a sloop too, but since I've got all the other hardware (yankee, staysail, shrouds, bob-stay, staysail boom etc) and I'm a bit of a purist I'd like to rig how it came from the factory, not to mention I'd probably have to find a bigger jib. The previous owner has never sailed before and unfortunately scrapped the bowsprit before I was able to buy it . I'm planning to make one out of a 2x8 or something similar. Do you know what type of wood your bowsprit is made of and how far out it extends past the bow?
Thanks,
Bryce
Sorry, I just saw your message on here. My uncle owns a macgregor 25 and he suggested using the bobstay to try and estimate the length. That being said a few pictures and dimensions would be a nice help. Thank you!
Also looking for pictures and/or measurements of a Venture 23 bowsprit and where the forestay connects. The wood on mine has unfortunately rotted completely off, so right now I'm just making educated guesses!
I'm finishing up making mine now, using the rigging as a guide for it's length. I've attached images with a tape measure. I settled on making it 1.5x5.5x6' (2x6 nominal) because the original (tang?) That bolts through the bowsprit and is the attachment for the bobstay and forestay was 1.5" wide and the width looked about right compared to the pictures I've seen of it. Let me know if you have any other questions. I still need to bolt it through the deck and bolt the bow pulpit through it. It'd be nice to know how the staysail boom attached.
