Fish boat info if anyone is interested...

Hi All

We also have a Sun Fish with a Lateen sail called the Laura B!

Your right! The breeze from a humming bird’s wing can move this boat along. It is a blast to sail but one best plan on getting wet!

My daughter Lydia found it on the curb intact except for the the mast which we ordered a replacement and were on the water inside of two weeks! We have had a lot of fun on lakes in NH with it as launch and retrieval are a breeze.

Lydia and I have even sailed it out of Portsmouth harbor out into the Atlantic and around Both White and Horn Islands.

Easy sailing, responsive, easy maintenance and a bushel basket of adventures.

While here visiting Lake Champlain we visited the Maritime Museum (a gem of a place and worth the visit if in the area) and found a display of the original plywood version of the Sun Fish!!!

Very cool to see the old plywood sunfish! We had one that my uncle made in plywood growing up. He knocked it off with measurements from one of his neighbor's glass boats. He was a marine engineer and naval architect, and built boats for relaxation. My Aunt sewed the sail. Good times.

Hard to tell from the video thumbnail, but unlike the lateen rig on the sunfish, the fish boats are gaff-rigged with a separate foresail. The gaff has multiple adjustments, the boom has adjustments, the mast rake is adjustable, rear mounted traveler, jib sheets, double main sheet (2:1 & 4:1), etc. I'm no expert in gaff-rigging, so there were terms for the various lines that I had never heard before. Line management is a real issue or the cockpit will start to look like a big bowl of spaghetti.



The keel/rudder design is a bit more businesslike than the sunfish, too. (This boat does not have a traveler while the boat I sailed on does).

In 1979 I went to the NYC boat show to purchase a Sunfish. After a coupe of hours, I bought a Phantom. The fellow who designed it used to work for AMF (I believe they produced Sunfish at that time), and decided to build a boat that improved on Sunfish. It seemed so to me:

I still have it and use it. Over easy is correct, be prepared to get wet in these wonderful craft.

You need to go back an review your first aid procedures. You got the "dirt" part right but a tourniquet around the neck is for nosebleeds.

I didn't think that sounded right! The Admiral's cure for whatever ails me seems to be a tourniquet around the neck... I'm starting to wonder about that girl.

Fairly good day. Got the carcass put together as far as I can until the interior finish work is complete. Did a test fit in the boat before starting the finish work. Managed to get the first coat of varnish on the interior portions.

Got in a good day, but not much visible progress. A lot of dry-fitting, trimming, sanding, varnishing, and edge banding plywood.

Realized I didn't want sharp corners on the ends a bit late in the game (after the second coat of varnish went on). So, made a guide block and broke out the oscillating tool. I didn't see the utility in them originally, but my buddy got one and said I needed one. Got one at HF, and fell in love with it. Great change-order tool. Don't use it often, but when you need it, there's nothing better. I would buy a name brand one, but the HF won't break.

Padded the guide block with paper towels and corners are rounded without scratching the finish.







Ironing on edge band is tedious work. Makes me wish I had built the silly thing out of solid wood, almost. But, once it's banded and I've gotten it all trimmed and sanded, it looks ok.

I,ll just b happy to get a copy of paper temp. plates so as I can make my own out of matching Caribbean Cherry laminate flooring same as my Galley Hutch & cubby cabinet it matches the colour of the mac cherry pretty good
