26X Sports Edition Information

Post by matv »

Hi all, I recently inspected a 26X which was labelled as Sport Edition (had stickers to this regard). The owner believed it was a special edition and had a lighter mast and some other things setup for racing such as boom traveller (although this had been removed). I haven't been able to find much on this model so just checking if anyone has heard of it or can point me in the right direction to learn more about it. Thanks.

Never heard of a “Sports Edition”. Got any pics?

While it can be sailed somewhat high-spiritedly, it’s not exactly a sport boat. Well, maybe with a big engine. But not under sail. I wonder what’s different about this boat. And I too have never heard of it. :|

That is hysterical. Maybe in a previous owners mind. Not a sporty sailboat but relatively very fast with a 90+ hp motor.

Never heard of that model.

Got pictures?

We all love our 26X with the mods. Kids are super excited to inherit Compromise. Lots of fantastic sailing adventures since 2005. Kids are great sailors now.

Thanks all for the responses.

Yes I thought it was quite odd for someone to consider a MacGregor as a sports racing boat.

I don't have any pictures and won't likely pursue this boat due to its condition but if the owners posts pictures I will share them here out of interest.

It had some obvious modifications done by one of its previous owner like moving jib cars out, a mainsheet traveller installed (unless it was factory fitted) and then removed just outside the cabin door. I am not familiar enough with standard masts to know if it was any different.

It did have a sticker/plaque thing on the port side rear near the MacGregor sticker which did mention the Sports Edition but perhaps that was not a specific model or added by an owner over the years.

I'd be very interested in some "SE" stickers. Possibly some racing strips too.

It certainly wasn't anything the factory offered.

Perhaps something concocted by one of the dealers but think it would be a "Special Edition"?

A lighter mast would have little effect, even if it was carbon.

u2fly had an interesting custom "sport edition" paint job. If I recall, he painted OVER a blue hull.

And a prototype he considered

And of course Erik's infamous stripes

Thanks everyone. I think PSNA is right and it appears there are others labelled as SE or Super Sport Special Edition.

I presume it has something to do with https://supersail.com/ but anyway, you answered my query that they may not be special.

You can call them anything you want; the factory didn’t offer it, and it won’t sail significantly better than any other :macx:

Any dealer could do whatever he/she wished once the factory got paid. Think Black Pearl.

Someday when Highlander decides to sell his :macm: , try and imagine what he is going to call it. :D. The Queen Mary edition.

Didn’t Eric also turn his :macx: into a pirate ship with cannons?

Yep
He has a lot of fun. Looks like he bought a bigger boat.
