I have wanted to learn how to put a loop in a rope by splicing for a long time. We bought 3 strand rope and cut it to 15 feet and 30 feet lengths. But there were no loops so we just tied off one end on the boat and the other end to the dock. So went on YouTube and learned how. After a couple of miss steps found a video that helped and have tied 9 of them. It only took about 15 minutes to get the first loop. It was much eaiser than I thought it would be.
To de-mystify the eye splice, it's just a short splice made back on itself. Untwist enough rope to make the splice. Make the eye out of still-twisted rope. Then take one strand and work back toward the bitter end. Straight up the rope, go over one strand and under the next five times. Turn the rope 1/3 turn and take five tucks with the next strand. Five tucks with the last strand and you are done. Trim, stitch, or whip it to suit yourself. If you don't have a proper fid to open the rope, a ballpoint pen end works. Save the ones with a long, slim point.
Ray is right and I didn't mean to diminish Ris' success. Not only is he 95% of the way to an anchor splice, he's ahead of 95 % of the alleged sailors out there. Good job, Ris.
