E Tec Fever

Post by Hurley »

Just about to take delivery of a new M and had speicified a 50 hp Suzuki as the drive unit. However, after attending the Sydney Boat show, being told to look at the 50 hp Evenrude E Tec...................

I was under the impression that 2 stroke was yesterdays technology and 4 stroke the way of the future ??

Very difficult to get an objective perspective. any input wellcomed :macm:

If I was gonna look to pass on 4-cycles and look to an ETEC, I'd be looking bigger than 50 ... Just one opinion, but having saved the weight I'd be trying to solve the power problem. The boat really can handle more horsepower, and I see little or no disadvantage ...

That much said, I've read of "just a glimmer" of maintenance complexities demanded by Evinrude's required operating procedures. I'd ask to take the owner manual home for a weekend and do some thorough reading ... YMMV.

E-tec is excellent technology, however still unproven and expensive.
i chose Nissan/Tohatsu because of it's proven reliability and value.

regardless of what you choose, i have one recommendation for a new M owner...
go with a 90hp!
it 'tis a bloody "motor" sailer ladd. Remember that!

in the long run...over the long haul...you will be much happier with a 315 pound 90-Etec or 310 pound 90-Nissan/Tohatsu over a 250 pound 50-Suzuki (that is not enough power for the Mac M or X).
and the new 2-strokes are very quiet and fuel efficient.

And, if your thinking "what about the 90-Suzuki?"
Well...it just weighs too much (415 pounds).

I have a 50 HP BF EFI Im really happy with it.

I cant really use more power the way I sail, but given the landscape now I would look at a 75 or 90HP if I were buying again.

This would also critically depend on my working with an engine installer with whom I was comfortable.

I'm very happy with my 40... (I have a 40 due to a local lake restriction)

Quiet, Cleaner than many 4 strokes, miserly on gas, high amp alternator, more torque than a comparable 50... With just 40 horses, I swing a 14x11 prop, which is every bit the prop, if not more, than what most 50s on this board swing.

Expensive, yes. To me, worth the ZERO maintenance, ZERO break-in, etc...

Unproven, I don't think you can say that anymore... That manufacturer has had their problems with direct injection 2 strokes, but I haven't been able to find any evidence of problems with the ETECs... I've looked... They are not brand new anymore...
