Motor steering disconnect

Post by DaveC426913 »

I keep coming back to this mod every few years. (There's almost certainly an older thread of mine kicking around here.) But steering safety is critical, so I don't want to mess with it until I'm 100% certain it's infallible.

Has anyone installed the BWY steering disconnect?

https://shop.bwyachts.com/product-p/5712-1x0.htm

I don't plan to install it unless I can operate it without going astern - i.e. some sort of remote arm so I can operate it by reaching behind the helm seat without raising it.

I can't tell from the BWY pic whether it can be customized. What think you?

I’ve contemplated a rope and pulley connect. I currently have a large wingnut on the original threaded stud.

Kurz has a clever solution. I'm going to implement something like this.

Thanks Russ for the pics.

After some years of using it I can say it works fine!

Just one thing to say. Secure the remote stick with a line. I lost the first one... I think it was during trailering...

I'd love to see a couple more pics of this. They aren't available in the other thread. I can't see how it's operated.

Does this start with the BWY kit and you added to it?

OK, I reviewed the text of the other thread.
1. It is the BWY kit.
2. Your mod is literally just an arm extender. You have to ...er... translate the rod horizontally to disengage the lock.

I might make a slightly more complex lever with a cable, but it's good to know that the lock can be manipulated remotely.

Yes, it's the bwy motor disconnect.

By sitting on the helm seat you grab back down the stick and move the motor disconnect.

As said, small invest,big output.

I will add that this is probably the best mod available from BWY. At least for me. Being able to disconnect the motor and tilt it up makes such a difference.

The boat should have come from the factory with this.

It is a minor pain to bend down to disconnect. However, Kurz's mod should make that easier.

Here's a video of the mod.

This is for an :macm:. It'll be a little different for an :macx:, but I'm sure the principle is the same.
