New 26M Owner in Wichita, KS

Post by SmithDrewSmith »

Hey everyone,

I have recently purchased a 2006 26M and I'm currently going through her trying to get her ready for the water.

Image

The previous owner bought it new in 2006 and took it out twice. Never even put the sails up as far as I can tell. Unfortunately the furler has been stored in a weird twist for the last 16 years and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to replace the foil (if that's the right word?) I'll try to find a thread on that or start a new one.

Image

It was also filthy just from years of animal droppings, leaves and moss-like junk that grew on it. Fortunately it seems to be cleaning up well with only pressure washing so far, and I got some good pointers from the Macgregor 26 Owners facebook group on taking out the stains. I picked up some star brite hull cleaner gel and some bleach spray. I haven't tried either yet, waiting for it to cool off a bit for that. The only lines that I think I'll need to replace are the rudder raise/lower lines and the daggerboard line, traveler lines and probably the jib halyard when I redo the furler. The rest of the lines were stored inside the boat and aside from some staining seem to be in good condition.

The cushions were removed in 2006 and stored in their finished basement and aside from some paint that somehow got on two of them, they're in perfect condition. Should make the boat look great once she's all cleaned up.

All the wood veneer has peeled as a result of what looks like standing water in the bottom of the cabin. I think it just kept the humidity high enough that it didn't stand a chance. I'll eventually replace all those panels with something else, but I'm not quite sure with what. I'm not a big fan of the wood veneer in the first place so I may try something different. I might also redo the galley top. I'll start a new thread on those projects once they kick off, probably not until winter.

I hate the hinge on the captain seat. Has anyone come up with a more robust system there? I would also like to install the stern rail seats, but $900 seems a bit spendy for them.

The motor is a Tohatsu 18HP, which I have recently learned via the facebook group is more motor than needed to get to hull speed, but not enough to plane. That irritates me a little as the seller told me he had it up to 20kts and I took him at his word. I don't plan on motoring a lot, but the ability to was a big selling point for this particular boat.

Electronics are another hobby of mine, so I'll probably want to add some more fun stuff that I haven't even thought of yet. One thing that comes to mind is some additional lighting for night sails. That's the thing my wife seems most interested in.

The radio is toast so I'll end up replacing that at some point, probably the speakers as well. Also, the trailer needs the wiring gone through as the previous owner decided to hack it up so he could put a warning light on the top of the mast. I'm thinking fully sealed LEDs will do the trick.

I'm glad this forum exists. I have used them in the past for several other hobbies which have largely moved to facebook groups. While great for engagement, it's really tough to archive information there.

Anyway, thanks for all the information you have all added here, and I hope I can contribute to it in a helpful way.

Welcome aboard! It sounds like you have a great boat there. You are going to have a great time with it!

Take your time and check out the boat thoroughly before you take it out. It's a lot easier to fix in the driveway than on the water.

Boats don't like to sit and lots of things go bad when they do. Make sure that everything that is supposed to move does move (in the way it's supposed to) and that everything that should not move doesn't.

Check the fittings, shrouds, and forestay for any signs of corrosion. If there is any sign of rust in them just go ahead and replace them. Rigging is cheap and readily available. Masts are expensive and hard to find. People are priceless and irreplaceable. Don't take a chance on marginal rigging.

The original electrical system was very simple and easy to check. Everything electrical should be checked for corrosion, chafe, and tight connections. Verify that any new electrical systems are properly fused and use appropriate wire and connectors. Wire nuts have no place on a boat. Ditto for solid wire.

If the battery is more than a couple of years old budget for a new one. It may last a long time; it may die on the first trip. Keep a booster battery on board until you know you can trust it. Keeping it on board after that is not such a bad idea either. On the other hand, pull starting an 18hp engine is not that hard. Maybe you don't need one.

If you don't know when the engine was last serviced plan on getting it done soon. Don't use any fuel if you don't know how old it is. Water pump impellers go bad when they are not used. Replacing one is cheap and easy; fixing an engine that has overheated is not.

If you don't know when the trailer bearings were last serviced plan on doing it before any long trips. Ditto for the brakes. If you have the original steel trailer check it thoroughly for rust. Look for visible rust. Tap everywhere, particularly the tongue, with a hammer. Listen for dull sounding areas. Don't forget to check the condition of the springs, hangers, bunks, and all the bolts holding stuff together under the trailer.

Make sure you have all of the required safety equipment for your state. Make sure everything is is good working order and that none of it is expired. Remember that fire extinguishers expire after 12 years now. Also remember that your boat is 25' 10" (that was very intentional) so it does not need equipment listed for boats 26' and above.

Cleaning the hull is easy. Most stuff will come off with a mild detergent and a brush. Organic stains will respond well to a diluted bleach solution. I usually give mine a quick spray with a hose and light scrub with a brush to loosen up the grime. Hit any stained areas with the diluted bleach solution. After the bleach does its magic give the whole boat a quick scrub with the mild detergent. Rinse and wax as needed.

Leave the foil out in the hot Sun for awhile. See if that helps. There is one kink in there that bothers me, but I’m looking at a photo.

Welcome to the forum! Glad to have you participating! Looks like you have a nice boat and a good selection of future projects.
I have a 60 hp, and it won't quite make 20 kts- just to give you a reference.

Looking forward to seeing more progress pics as you go. The forum has a lot of great info (see the mods section), and the various discussion threads can be pretty informative.

Yes, the helm seat hinge arrangement on the M was a prime example of DUI (designing while intoxicated). Anxious to see what you do with that. It hasn't made it to the top of my list yet.

I did some galley work awhile back, and others chimed in. Here's the link if you ever have trouble falling asleep.

Again, glad to have you with us. Enjoy your boat!

Thanks for the advice, especially that about the motor.

A mildly amusing thing happened when negotiating the sale. I mentioned with no battery I didn't have a way to check the wiring and needed to budget to replace some of it just in case. The previous owner said "Nah, it's just 18/2 romex, don't cost nothin' to replace it" I said no way a production boat has romex wire. Then I looked in the battery box and saw what certainly did look like romex, but on closer inspection is actually marine cable. I'll have to make sure he didn't "fix" anything with romex.

Thanks, but I don't follow. I love pizza more than the next guy though...

Tried that but it's pretty set in this shape. It's going to get to 106°F tomorrow, so I'll give it another shot.

Thanks for that reference point. The galley mods you've done look great. The pictures I skimmed anyway, haven't read the whole thing yet.

I'll wait to see how annoying the helm seat is during use before I go solving a problem that isn't.

Tradition dictates the new guy buys the pizza. Of course, it only applies at an actual meeting - best I can tell.

I owe a lot of these guys pizza! 8)

I have a 50HP Honda 4stroke, and I have hit damn close to 20mph. The boat was completely empty; there was an empty ballast, and I was the only passenger.

With ballast in, my wife and I as the crew, provisions for over a week on the water, and full open throttle, I hit close to 12mph. Close, but not there.

I guess I'll just wait and see how she performs in the water with the 18HP 4 stroke and go from there. Thanks for the data points!

Replacing the tires are on the short list, but they seem to be in very good condition. It was a stressful drive home that's for sure.

I've never tried anchovies. Not sure that's likely to change soon.

Just becasue your tires "seem to be in very good condition" does not mean they are. I replace my tires every four years, they look almost new, but they sit outside and get hit with UV, etc. 24/7.
