TIP: Adding Links to Postings

Post by kmclemore »

If you're going to add a URL link to a post, it's important that you use the 'Insert URL' button at the top of the post's editing box (the button that looks like a couple of chain links) in order to ensure your link appears properly.

For example, below this line I've just pasted a link to an Amazon item without using the 'Insert URL' button...

Now, here is that same link, but this time posted using the 'Insert URL' button...

https://www.amazon.com/Hold-Aerosol-Str ... B08DYDMY47

Note that the first link can't be clicked or accessed, whereas the second can.

Please use the 'Insert URL' button whenever you're inserting a link to a web page.

Cheers,
Kevin

Probably you will get surprised, but both links are clickable ;-)

It works for me too.

I would point out that that particular (Amazon) link is a complex object that contains multiple components - some of which (thumbnail, text) are clickable, and some of which (background) are not.

That is very atypical for a link. Almost all normal links should work fine:

So, your advice is certainly valid (and recommended), but it is only an problem in unusual cases.

The link, for some reason, is not at all clickable for me.

I use WIndows 10, Firefox 102.0.1.

I just ordered some aerosol straw holders. :) I'm always losing those straws.

Might be a Firefox version thing.
Top link works for me with Chrome, Safari and Firefox Version 103.0 (64-bit) on my Mac running Big Sur. Also Safari on my iPhone.
Link does NOT work with Opera on my iPhone. Just displays an Amazon logo.
Haven't tried Firefox on my Windows box.

Good advice for other links.

Yeah, I purposely chose that link. I got turned onto those by a restoration friend and I love them. Like you, I always lose those dang straws.

Kevin, the top link works with Firefox 103.0 (64-bit) on Windows 10.

Maybe try updating your Firefox browser.

Just updated and it still doesn't work.

HOWEVER... I found the problem.

I am running an ad blocker add-on on Firefox to reduce the dancing bologna on my browser and when I turn that off for this forum the link NOW WORKS.

So... the solution is to disable add blockers for the Mac Forum.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

Another option....buy more straws. Which might make sense for me since the "saver" option is too late for my collection of lost straws.

Usually in the driveway, buried on the workbench, or absentmindedly left in my coffee cup after stirring my coffee with them....
