MEAD MADNESS

Post by Steve K »

April 23 through May 2. Lake Mead, NV.
This is an informal event that has been taking place for the past several years. It is not sponsored nor santioned by anyone. It's just a bunch of trailer sailors showing up at the same place, at the same time. It's sort of our way of kicking off the sailing season.

We generally gather at Callville Bay Marina, over the first weekend. Then we spend the following week exploring the big desert lake, behind the Hoover dam. We will usually beach or anchor in one of thousands of quiet coves at night, or spend the evening at one of the four or five marina guest docks.

We usually end up some 60+ miles from our starting point, going as far as possible, toward the Grand Canyon. In years past we were able to go all the way to the canyon's opening, but low water levels have prevented it for a few years now.

Still, it's a great week of sailing in my book. You will feel like we are the only people on earth, by the third day. And there are opportunities to see Big Horned Sheep grazing just feet from your boat (other wildlife too). Imagine sailing through a canyon, wing on wing, looking up at shear cliff walls that tower 500 feet above the waterline, on either side of your boat.
Sometimes we'll sail one of the big basins all day long and never see anyone who is not in our group. It would be a crime not to bring your camera, as there are some awesome sights to behold, and photograph.

Yep, if you are looking for a few days of pure sailing and pure peace and quiet, join us for Mead Madness. Bring plenty of drinking water  .

We will be sticking fairly close to Callville Bay marina over the first weekend and will monitor VHF channel 68. Give us a holler.

It costs $20 for your vehicle and boat/trailer to enter the Lake Mead National Recreation area. This is good for seven days (been there 9 before, with no trouble from the rangers).
Warning....
Don't sleep in your boat in the marina parking lot. There is a $50 fine for that. Either stay in the nearby camp grounds or launch and stay at the guest dock for $10.

Hope to see some of you there.

Hi Rob,
Could already be hitting the nineties in late April. On the other hand it may be cooler. It's difficult to judge this time of year. The last few times I've gone, this time of year, it's been very comfortable, most days.
It's probably best to check Accuweather, or one of the other weather sites for a five day forecast, when the time gets close. If you can't get a forecast for Lake Mead itself, check the forecast for Henderson and Boulder City Nevada.

I would suggest a bimini top (It'll be the first year I've had one though), plenty of sun block and lots of drinking water.

We do stop along the voyage, at a couple marinas where we can get these things, if we run low. You'll be able to get ice, food etc. You'll also be able to pump/empty holding tanks/ porta potty and get more (expensive) gasoline.

Hope you can join us. Let me know about when you plan to arrive. We can help you rig and/or get launched, if you like.

Feel free to write me a private message with further questions etc.

Mead Madness Sail April 22-29, 2005

Post by Captain Kimo »

'8)'Mead Madness Sail scheduled for April 22-29, 2005. Open to all sailboats. Plan on racing in 7th Annual Las Vegas Bay MacGregor Founders' Day Cup Race on Saturday, April 23. Fun Race for all experience levels.

WHERE: Callville Bay Marina, Lake Mead NV (12 mi East from Junction Rt 147/167 on Northshore Scenic Drive, Lake Mead NV). Beach boats at small cove just East of the Callville Bay Wash (Northeast side of Callville Bay). Hopefully the location of LVBMA Founders' Day Cup Race awards and No Host BBQ.

WHEN: Probably start out Sunday morning April 24 for Overton/Virgin Basin (through the "Narrows"). Will monitor VHF Channel 68 on the hour to direct late comers.

PROVISIONING: Those coming in from California on US 15, turn off on to Rt 146 just after Sloan, NV. Stay on Lake Mead Drive (becomes Rt 147). Stop at mall area Southeast corner of Boulder Hwy and Lake Mead Drive. Super Wal-Mart, and West Marine there. Gas up boat and vehicle before entering Lake Mead Recreation Area. Take on both drinking water and ice here as well. All are available at marinas, but more expensive. Park Fee is for 7 days, but never heard of anyone being challenged by the Park Service for staying longer. Believe it allows them to legally evict squatters.

''Hope to see you all there. Had 12 boats last year.

Hey people, what's the latest on Mead Madness. Haven't heard a thing since Feb 16th.
Any last minute news? Any last minute tips?
Is it still on? Please let's hear something. I'm planning to drive up and I need some "warm fuzzies" that there will be someone there.

Ahoy Roy, Captain Kimo should be launching on Thursday morning and will plot out the course for the Founders Day Race on Saturday. I plan to launch Thursday afternoon 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. depending on how early I leave the Los Angeles area. We will most likely spend Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights beached in Calville Wash( about 1 mile East of Callville Marina) and then leave for the far reaches of Lake Mead Sunday morning. Most other boats will arrive on Friday afternoon. We all beach together and spend great moments swapping sailing stories, ETC... I bet we will have 10 to 15 boats join us, and these are good people to sail with. Last year we had boats arrive from Idaho, Utah, Arizona and California. One more week!

Mead Madness and Founder's Day Cup Race

Post by Newell »

Roy and others attending MM05 for the first time.

Plan on the the Saturday am Fun race. It is both fun and challenging. It's the closest thing you can find to one-design racing for the Xs.

Looking forward to meeting and beating you LOL.
