Mail sail halyard and downsail

Post by chadwiseman »

Trying to setup the ropes for my main halyard and down sail back to my cockpit but I’m trying to avoid drilling . See my photo but I’m not please with how the rope is rubbing the side of the pulley. Any suggestions

Actually, it doesn’t look bad. Are you feeling a resistance?

I don't see a deck organizer in your photos, so I'm not sure how much of your issue might relate to that. Also, I am confused as to the purpose of the blue line in the photo. Doesn't line up with the mast as a halyard would.

I will cast a little shade on the double pulley you are using. While good enough for outdoor use, I don't see this as "sailboat gear". Harken, Ronstan, and even some of the off-brand providers of sailing hardware, can provide pulleys with better performance at a modest price. Also, don't use a double pulley when only one is needed. It's a matter of balance if you want the rope to track true.

My advice:

-Decide exactly what you want to lead back to the cockpit and what is best handled elsewhere.
-Experiment with deck organizers, clutches, pulleys, etc. taped in place - or otherwise removeable - until it all "flows". This is a process. Take your time.
-Drill as necessary. I have never seen a workable halyards-aft setup that did not involve drilling a few holes. Fasteners should be SS bolts, nuts and washers, not just screws drilled into the fiberglass.

One more thing, with apologies. I do hope you have a plan to deal with the wiring so it does not present a trip hazard.

Best of luck, and happy sailing!
The key to inner peace is to admit you have a problem and leave it at that.

Concur with all of the above.

Your primary issues are only using one side of a double block, and not using a swivel block that can orient itself to the pull.

Maybe try this one?

Also, downhaul ?
