As a Navy engineman warrant officer one might believe we just look at things a figure them out … but as an instructors we are constantly teaching to reference source and tech manuals
… so in reference to timing marks for Nissan and Tohatsu 50 HP outboards, original equipment on the M26x, the service manual indicates that along the top of the flywheel, ( with the starter teeth) you will find two small divots about one inch apart, with several raised vertical marks embossed along the side of the wheel just below the divots .
As you look at the divots, the one on the left is TDC or top dead center, on the right is 5 degrees after TDC, and the other vertical marks, are increments of 5 degrees before or after …
“ Dead” timing ( motor off) for idle is 3-4 degrees after TDC, as aligned with the flat or left edge of a small casting or mold mark located just below the flywheel, an inch or two … high throttle position (again motor off) is 24 degrees before TDC, or roughly five verticle marks to the left of the left divot (TDC). Use a short straight edge to measure the verticle from the boss mold edge.
In addition, the entire procedure starts, by checking the distances of the control linkage rods running horizontally and just to the right of the molding boss. The linkage rods have adjustable ends and center of the rod ends, should be 99 millimeters on the shorter rod, and 129 millimeters on the longer.
Lastly, these rods touch to a landing point when moved manually (engine off) and are spring loaded and these touch points are also adjustable. Aside from the measurement particular to the 50D , the rods can be moved while engine running to check smoothness of running … more to come….
By the by … now that it’s running well we decided to upgrade to a Suzuki 60AV, so the Nissan 50D is available (make offer?)

Re: NS50D timing marks
Correction to timing marks: the right one of the tw divots as described is actually 10 degrees ( not 5) after TDC, therefore is the second of the raised embossed vértice marks to the right of the left pivot (TDC). It’s a process …
