Emergency motor shut off switch

Post by Bennkat81 »

I want to add an emergency motor shut off switch to my 2008 26M. It has a Honda 40hp the PO had repowered with. Does anyone have a Honda 40 or 50 with a shut off switch installed and can show/tell me where their switch is installed and how it is wired in?
I don't think it is absolutely required but I plan on a lot of single handing and want the added safety.

All outboards come with a clip-on emergency shutoff switch; you can't start the motor without placing the clip in the shutoff switch. Normally when single handing you clip a springy wire between the shutoff switch and your body, and all you have to do is pull the wire to remove the clip and the motor is off. The shutoff switch is in the throttle quadrant near the key.

Well a shutoff switch is not on this boat. The throttle is a honda control with the non start in gear control on the motor itself. The ignition switch is on the pedestal.below the steering wheel. So I need to tie in the ESO wires at the ignition switch wiring harness. Just not sure which wire to tie in to. Then install ESO so the lanyard doesn't get hung up on anything.

As mentioned above, all outboards have them. Your boat should have one. Perhaps the PO hid it in the pedestal or something.

Most of the Honda installs rotated the controls 90 degrees so that the key is facing down. The emergency cutoff is right next to the key. If it has not been disabled by rewiring the control box you will probably find that someone has left the clip in it but removed the halyard that should be connected to the driver.
