And this is what they will look like after the storm if you leave that little tail hanging out.

This is probably not an issue for you in a slip, but years ago a Noreaster did some damage to a mooring field near where we lived.
MANY of the boats were "cut free" by their anchors on the bow roller. The pitching like a bronco caused their painters to be cut by the anchor and MANY boats were set free and ended up totaled.

So the moral is keep your lines protected. Chaffe gear if needed. Long stretchy spring lines are best vs. short dock lines with little elastic stretch to absorb shocks.

This storm looks really nasty. I have a real bad feeling about it. I pray our members are safe.

Eagle eye. :P You caught my jib tail exposed a tad. Hope my twist ties make up for my lubber like oversight!

Hi Herschel!
Hope you and the other MacGregor forum members in the upcoming Milton storm path are all battened down, secured, hauled out and evacuated (as appropriate).
Milton looks to be a substantial storm with a hard fast punch.

I don’t believe in “omens” but Florida sure has been having a rough go of it weather wise this year.

Thank you. Have not been up to the marina, but my live aboard slip mate returned after evacuation and remarked that my boat came though just fine. I had it stripped down w/o boom/mainsail and full ballast. No canvas, of course. doubled up mooring lines and my signature heavy duty twist ties on my jib. I'll get up there tomorrow most likely to see for myself. :|

Appreciate your good thoughts. My admiral and I did do well thought this. No damage to boat, property, or travel trailer or injury to ourselves; family from St. Pete that evacuated to our home in Orlando will return to check their home tomorrow. Jury still out. Huge tree fell on our daughter's home near Orlando crushing garage with two cars and penetrated granddaughter's bedroom which was empty at the time. Restoration starts tomorrow. This may be way off, but the image of bowling comes to mind. Hurricanes are like poor bowlers. The ball comes down the alley, strikes somewhere off center and leaves a sloppy spare. Some pins not even touched, others wacked all over the place and sent spinning. A lot of ways to think about it. Blind luck, philosophically, spiritually, and just feeling unfettered aghast. I prayed at everyone on the 50+ trees of my 1/3 acre residential lot that none would fall and damage a neighbors house. They all stood strong. yet, my own daughter's tree did untold damage to her own home. We will reset the "pins" in due course and await the next "frame!" :x :P :? :| :) 8) 8) :D

Hi Herschel!

Glad you made through OK!
Sorry about your Daughter’s home!
We are so glad everyone is OK!!!
This must be a difficult time for them with the damage to home and property.
Our hearts and thoughts go out to them.

We liked your approach to hurricanes as poor bowlers. :D :D
Also liked your approach to dealing with the aftermath
A lot of ways to think about it. Blind luck, philosophically, spiritually, and just feeling unfettered aghast.
Hurricanes can do a lot of damage and harm.
There have been, are and will be more weather events with the odds are they will be getting more frequent.
We appreciate your mature reflection and embrace on the randomness of it all. 8) 8)
Things are what they is.
Maturity is demonstrated by the choice to constructively deal with the “is condition” and rebuild.

Looks like your boat preparation held up!
That’s a relief!
(When we had to leave Over Easy in her slip during a significant storm last year we were glad we double lines and added fore/aft spring lines. The fwd dock cleat snapped one of its bolts and lifted. Having the other lines definitely helped redistributing the loads.)

Again, glad you are OK and sorry for your Daughter’s damages.
Hope the rebuild/replacements go smoothly.

Best Regards

Thank you for the kind words and thoughts. Did get up to my boat today. Pleased with the hardiness of our MacGregors. Had two inches of bilge water. Still trying to find that leak. I'll probably start a new thread on leak investigation and analysis next week. Got to bail out what I do have first. :P Can't say enough good things about my heavy duty twist ties on the jib. It did not unfurl one inch despite my lubber like tail of my clew left showing. It took 85 mph gusts on the nose. That's the American Spirit!

Herschel, glad to see you came through so well. Those ties around the furler worked well.

Sorry about your daughter's damages. The important thing is they are safe.
