Going to trailer the boat to NY this May put in on Champlain Canal go to Champlain Lake, then on into Canada to Montreal, Ottawa and down the Rideau Canal. Might go back pick up truck and tailer and go to Georgian Bay for a month. Getting the boat ready list is 1. Rebed front two windows 2. repaint black portion of hull around windows and the 2 other black stripes 3.Replace rub rail. So far have taken out front two windows removed caulk, sanded by hand all the black around the windows front and sides also the two other strips that are black. Removed Rubrail, all the caulk under rubrail, tightend all bolts holding top and bottom halves of the boat together, epoxied all areas of joint that had slight damage. (bolts under rubrail are spaced every 4 inches good stainless as not one has rust after 22years) Will be priming with a gray primer before painting black. If anyone has info on the best way to put on the rubrail all helpful tips will be welcomed.
We spent the last two summers, 23 and 24, finishing our tour of the National parks Excluding Hawaii and Alaska national parks. We normally alternate one summer on the boat and the next in the trailer. So now we are going to spend 2 summers in a row on the boat!!

We rebeded the front windows today. The one leaked on the admirals head when it rained if we were sleeping is why they were taken out and the old caulk removed then rebeded.
The black stripes paint was getting thin is the reason for sanding and repainting. pic below


This next pic is of the sanded black stripes. It was all hand sanding.


The rub rail was removed because it was hard, beatup with hunks missing. There were some bashed in places so we put a heavy coat of thickend epoxy over it to seal it up. The yellowish color is the epoxy.


We will water test the front windows tomorrow and wash the boat then start the repainting.

We started painting the black yesterday. We are using Pettit EZPoxy and Pettit Brushing Thinner 120. Also a $20 very nice all paints brush. We thinned the paint just a little with the Brushing Thinner to keep down the noticeable brush marks in the finished paint job. (I spent about 20 years painting houses). We also used frog tape to keep the paint lines straight. (almost went crosseyed putting the tape on ) I did sand the black down with 220 and then 320 before the first coat. Sanded the first coat of black with 400 before painting the second coat. I thought we might need a primer but got great adhesion without a primer. It took less than half a quart of paint. And before painting but after the sanding we washed the whole boat. We also tested the windows we just reinstalled for leaks while washing, no leaks. There were about 12 hours of sanding, taping and painting in this job. Next job is putting on the new rub rail.

Wow! What a difference! Great work!

We put on the new rub rail. First we found the middle of the rub rail then starting in the front we put on one side, then the other side without putting the 5200 on. We tied them together in the back then attached them to a light weight come along. We then stretched the rub rail, you could do this by hand but it was easer with the come along it kind of keeps both sides even. Once there was tension on the rubrail we placed the rubrail above the joint where the bolts are so we could tighten without trying to pull the rubrail over all the bolts. The rail stretches easily. We then started at the bow putting the 5200 in the interior of the rub rail in the center (1/4 to 3/8 bead). We would then place it on the joint. We would do about 2 feet at a time. Once we got about 4 or 5 feet completed we would go to the other side and do about 5 feet then just alternated until we got to the bend in the stern and we stopped. Waited 24 hours and then cut the rubrail at about 10 inches to go around the bend to where it ends. Before cutting have someone hold the rubber so it doesn't retract toward the front by pressing the rubber against the boat. 5200 the last 10 inches and put the 3 screws in to hold the rubrail in its new home. Before cutting one side make sure and secure the other side of the rubrail to the come along so it does not come loose from the come along. I think we stretched the rubrail about 2 feet on each side for a total of around a total of 4 feet. May have been closer to 3 feet. A few pics of the come along and ties to the rubrail. The full cure time of 5200 is 96 hours which is why you have to hold the rail before cutting it loose from the come along.

Would you mind sharing about how long did it take you to prep and paint?
And about how long did it take to do the new windows?
(Doesn’t look like we’ll be able to fit in any painting this season for Over Easy or Scrambled… the kitchen here down south has the priority this year in time and finances…)

OverEasy took about 12 hrs to sand,(120 then 220 then 320 grit sandpaper), then paint first coat, then sand with 400 grit, then second coat. This process took about 12 hrs. Our front windows were in good shape so we just removed them by cutting the caulk and some very careful prying. We then removed all the caulk, then caulked the window frame and reinstalled windows. Took about 4 hours. We were going to prime but painted a small area and the adhesion was very good so we did not prime.
